Emma Raducanu says beating Serena Williams 'wasn't easy'

Cameron Norrie secured his first career victory over Andy Murray as he battled from a set down to edge the all-British clash at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Murray had won their only previous meeting in 2019 and although Norrie came into the match the favourite following his run to the Wimbledon semi-finals, the 35-year-old looked superior after recovering from an opening break to take the first set.

Murray missed a chance to break Norrie early in the second after putting a volley at the net wide and the British No 1 began to take back control of the rallies. Norrie took his break point opportunities while Murray continued to pass up chances, leading to the deciding set where physicality proved decisive. Murray struggled with muscle cramps late in the third set while Norrie, one of the fittest players in the tour, continued to improve. Norrie broke Murray late in the third before serving out to take a 3-6 6-3 6-4 win in other two and a half hours.

“There was not much in it,” Norrie said after becoming the third British man after Tim Henman and Kyle Edmund to defeat Murray. “I think it came down to physicality. It didn’t help him that his match with Stan went long and in the end I just tried to keep it in play. It’s a massive win for me, beating Andy for the first time. It’s not the way I wanted to beat him but it’s nice to do it anyway.”

Murray is boosted by his most efficient hold in a while. The serve seemed to slip slightly during the second set but he finds his mark out wide to edge in front again. The player who serves to start has won each of the opening two sets.

Murray opens with a double fault and Norrie increases the pressure with a winner to get to 0-30 early. Murray responds well with two positive points but another miss at the net brings up deuce as Norrie holds on. Norrie is then able to race to a drop shot but his lofted lob drifts long, and Murray gets on the board to start the third set.

But how about this from Murray! A forehand winner on the opening point is followed by two more as he immediately gets a look at 0-40 on the Norrie serve. Norrie saves the first and Murray looks a little uneasily at his ankle after a slight wobble. There’s a shout of frustration between Norrie putting away the smash and then the ace out wide and as quickly as Murray raced to three break points, Norrie storms back to take the second set.

Norrie punishes Murray as he attacks a short ball mid-court for a forehand winner. On deuce, Murray goes for the serve and volley but Norrie unleashes a dazzling return on the angle to set up break point.

And this time Norrie gets it. Norrie opened up the angle once more and Murray can only watch as his slices backhand drifts wide.

Norrie moves a game away from the second.

Murray is looking at another simple hold but Norrie mixes things up with a low slice to Murray’s backhand, which brings up deuce. Murray on the run then nets on the forehand out wide and Norrie gets break point, only his second of the match after the opening game, which Murray saves with a clutch serve up the middle.

But Murray nets again on the forehand, before Norrie makes a glaring miss on the second serve from Murray on break point. From there, Norrie goes long twice and Murray gets the hold after eight minutes.

Norrie goes big on a forehand from inside the baseline but chucks it wide and Murray gets a chance at 0-30. Murray, though, can’t make the most of the second serve at 0-30 and Norrie recovers with a backhand winner and drop shot. Murray is the one pressing for the break still.

Murray senses a lapse in focus creeping in as he is faced with 30-30 and then tries to fire himself up at the back of the court. It’s an untidy game but he gets away with it, sealed with an ace out wide.

Murray, though, gets back to business on his serve with an opening hold to love. That serve is working nicely so far and interestingly, Murray has won every match this season in which he has taken the first set.

Norrie reponds by holding to love, a much more straight forward service game to the previous one.
