Set on an elegant, quiet side street in famously pretty Burford, the Bay Tree is a boutique hotel that emanates history and comfort. It offers a winning combination of old-school features and contemporary charm, with big stone fireplaces, squishy sofas and striking art on the walls. The wisteria-clad main building is a 17th-century townhouse with a sunny, modern extension that houses a light-filled restaurant, and gives on to a semi-secret walled garden.

This is a pleasingly smart-casual venue, with stylish furnishings and lots of cosy corners in public spaces on the ground floor. From the library with crackling fires in winter to the expansive lawns with deck chairs in summer, enormous care is taken to create a kick-back atmosphere.

Order a coffee and it will come with a little biscuit, sit by the fire in the library and it will be gently stoked by quietly attentive staff; such little touches add enormously to the pleasure of a stay here. Facilities, meanwhile, include the glorious walled garden with its terrace for outdoor dining, private dining areas and a generously large car park at the back of the hotel.
