Comprising five houses dating from the 1700s, it reflects both past and present, with a five-star look created by New York-based designer Alexandra Champalimaud. The dark green-walled Refectory and the Library, with its monkey wallpaper, are great places to hunker down, as is the funky Alchemy Bar.

As this is a boutique hotel, there are few extra facilities, no gym, for instance, but the 24-hour concierge can recommend numerous activities and walks in the area. Book lovers will enjoy the fact there is a "Book of the month" with copies available, as well as on the Academy Kindle. The service itself is friendly and unobtrusive.
