The vintage shops and markets of Brick Lane are just a saunter away, while Spitalfields and the artistic streets of Shoreditch are about a 15-minute walk. The Whitechapel Gallery, known for its exhibitions of contemporary artists, and the Toynbee Studios, the headquarters of performance art in London, are within a short walk of the hotel.

By car: the hotel is 4 hours from Manchester, 2 hours 30 mins from Birmingham and 7 hours from Glasgow. Public parking is available from £4 per hour.

By train: Liverpool Street Station is 15 minutes' walk away. Kings Cross and Euston stations are around 30 minutes away in a taxi. Book trains to London.

The hotel has embraced its location and commissioned several artists to enliven the public spaces, including well-known street artist Jay Kaes, who has spray-painted a mural in the basement reception. Elsewhere botanicals are seen throughout in interesting installations of plants and flowers, while rich teal and ochre colours appear in the upholstery and paintwork.


Staff are friendly and personable, and check-in is swift in the basement reception area. At breakfast, serving staff take the time to talk to guests about their stays and their plans for exploring the city. Facilities are limited, but there's a fitness area and you can leave luggage.

Rooms are calm and minimal, with pops of colour coming in with perhaps a red sofa or chair or an abstract painting on the wall. Pepys Gold, with a nod to the history of the great fire of London, is paired with Lincolnshire Poacher smoked cheese and tequila-infused chutney, while potent Royal Navy-inspired Sedition is complemented by a tempura oyster with ponzu dressing.
