OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Although Richmond train station is only 20 minutes from Waterloo, you're well away from the hustle and bustle here. On the banks of the River Thames between Richmond and Petersham, the riverfront is home to some lovely pubs, bars, restaurants and cafés. Boat trips to Hampton Court and Kew Gardens are possible, and of course there's Richmond Park.

By car: the hotel is just over 4 hours from Manchester and 2.5 hours from Bristol. Parking costs £18 per day.

By train: Richmond station is a 15 minutes' walk away. Book trains to Richmond.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

This boutique hotel, made up of two Georgian townhouses, has great style: marble-topped tables, subdued greens and a flash or two of gold in the inviting restaurant, and fabulous contemporary artworks, a splendidly big bar, an open fire glowing in the fireplace and an antique baby grand in the high-ceilinged lounge bar. Guest rooms display a similar panache, and there are a lot of vintage Penguin books to be seen.

THE FACILITIES

Primarily focusing on good food, this is not the sort of hotel with lots of facilities. As well as the restaurant and bar, there's a sizeable garden. Bikes can be hired, and boat trips and horse riding can be arranged. At a nearby wellness centre, a sister company offers complimentary access to yoga and fitness classes. Service is friendly and efficient.

BED AND BATH

The characterful rooms are spacious and pleasingly decorated, typically with earthy light grey walls and curtains, light hardwood floors, and splashes of purple and maroon - such as carpeted areas or cushions. There are very comfortable beds, a desk area, a sofa and easy chairs, and some rooms have fireplaces and balconies.

Key amenities: Ensuite bathroom with monsoon showers, tea and coffee facilities, radio, flat screen TV, minibar, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

The cosy restaurant, overlooking the river and decked out in restful shades of green, with expensive contemporary art (for sale) on the walls, serves modern British cuisine. Helmed by MasterChef: The Professionals winner Steven Edwards, the dishes are complex and original, however, portions are on the small side.

Steven Edwards at Riverhouse: elegant dining room. Tasting menu, local produce. Open daily for lunch, Mon-Sat for dinner. Menus from £40.
