Built in 1905, the Tower Bridge Magistrates Court was functional until seven years ago and the hotel itself is named after John Dixon Butler, its Edwardian architect. The design makes clever nods to its former use, with 60 transparent handcuffs attached to the impressive 6m long chandelier in the grand entrance hall. The holding cell benches complete with carvings by ex-cons have been transformed into works of art, and hundreds of old keys, found during the extensive refurbishment, are embedded in the lift lobby.

All the staff - from the concierge to the cooks - are passionate about the hotel's history and can't wait to tell you about it (sometimes more than once!). There's a small gym and 24-hour room service from the restaurant and bar, plus a great meeting or events room in the other original courtroom on the first floor.
