OVERVIEW

This classic Copenhagen five-star is a landmark on the city-centre skyline. Often referred to as the world's first design hotel, it was originally the vision of celebrated Danish architect Arne Jacobsen. Now, following a complete refurbishment that's sensitively upgraded and refreshed its mid-century interiors, it's looking sleeker than ever.

OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Walk out of the front entrance of the central station and you can see the hotel ahead of you. It has plenty going for it on the location front: on one side, the town hall square, main shopping streets and city centre; on the other, the lively local neighbourhood of Vesterbro, renowned for its nightlife. The southernmost of the Copenhagen lakes is seven minutes walk away and it's just a couple of hundred yards to Tivoli's main entrance.

By plane: direct flights to Copenhagen from London, Manchester and Edinburgh (1 hour 45 minutes). It's a 20-minute drive to the hotel. Book flights to Copenhagen.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The building is one of the most famous creations of Arne Jacobsen, who masterminded everything from the Modernist exterior to the door handles and restaurant cutlery. Behind the boxy façade, there's a softer, glamorous feel to the interiors, from the sleek spiral staircase of the lobby to the curvy Jacobsen chairs, freshly upholstered in Kvadrat/Raf Simons textiles.

THE FACILITIES

There isn't much by way of facilities but laundry service is available and room service runs round the clock. Guests get access to the large gym next door and the hotel can help with rental bikes. The podium table of free refreshments in reception is a nice touch, offering water and snacks.
