OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Breitner House is on a busy road overlooking Oosterpark, away from the centre in the attractive Amsterdam East residential neighbourhood. There is good access to De Plantage (the old centre) and the Eastern Canal District, and nearby trams take you further afield. Local sights include Artis Zoo, the Rembrandt House, Hortus Botanicus, The Tropical Museum, the Portuguese Synagogue and the Jewish Historical Museum. For modern Dutch cuisine, head for Elkaar, while Brouwerij Troost has a good selection of beers.

By train: the Eurostar goes direct from London St Pancras to Amsterdam Centraal. The hotel is a 15-minute taxi ride from the station. Book trains to Amsterdam.

By plane: direct flights from London and Manchester take around 1 hour 15 minutes. The hotel is a 20-minute drive from Schiphol airport and a 10-minute drive from central station. Parking costs €18 per day. Book flights to Amsterdam.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

This grand house has the feel of the 1800s and is awash with impressive artwork, fine accents of silk, velour and brocade fabrics and the highest quality antique furniture. There are chandeliers, stuccoed ceilings and stained glass windows.

THE FACILITIES

This is a private home, and therefore does not have the range of facilities you may expect at a hotel, such as a pool, spa, bar or fitness room. However, the levels of comfort and luxury, the personal touch and attention to detail all make up for it.
