OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

It's hard to beat the location of this hotel, if you want to be in Dublin's south city centre and beside the creative quarter. The hotel is on St Andrew's Lane in the hub of the shopping, restaurant and nightlife areas. The surrounding streets are full of cafés, restaurants, pubs and boutiques - with Temple Bar for nightlife, Grafton Street for shopping, and Trinity College and lots of the city's tourist attractions and museums within a few minutes' walk.

By plane: direct flights to Dublin from Manchester and Birmingham (1 hour), and London (1 hour 15 minutes). It's a 30-minute drive to the hotel. Nearby parking costs €20 per day. Book flights to Dublin.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The hotel is cosy, with the reception and bar/restaurant one floor below street level with lots of earthy colours, light-coloured wood, muted lighting and plants creating a cosy public area. All of the materials are recycled and reused, for example benches and counters are made from recycled plastic. The earthy colours carry through to the rooms which use soft natural colours and light wood.

THE FACILITIES

The hotel is carbon neutral so energy is renewable and the heating system uses sustainable technology rather than fossil fuels, and there are eco-settings in the room for the air conditioning and lighting. Rooms are soundproofed and guests can operate the blackout curtains with a switch.

BED AND BATH

Snug rooms at 10 sqm in size are very cosy and compact, and suitable for one person, while Cosy rooms are 12sqm and can suit two people. Rooms have plenty of clever shelving and under-bed storage space, a fold-down desk and a toilet and shower. Toiletries are Irish, from the Handmade Soap Company, and there is a compostable bag.

Room types: Snug Nest, Cosy Nest

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, tea and coffee facilities, mineral water, TV, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

The bar and restaurant is named ALT in a nod to the hotel's location on the site of the former Andrew's Lane Theatre. Most of the menu is based on local produce in season and the kitchen is zero-waste, so everything is used including imperfect vegetables, such as their 'wonky' veg soup. There is an emphasis on Irish brands in the bar, with local craft beers, whiskeys and vodkas featuring on the menu. Cocktails are creative and use local names and expressions.

ALT: rustic restaurant and bar, casual dining. Open daily for buffet breakfast, all-day dining and drinks.
