OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Either a short walk away or a mere three minutes by car, Clifden is a pretty town sandwiched between the Twelve Bens mountains and the Atlantic Ocean and well worth a visit. Also worth seeing is Kylemore Abbey and the Victorian Walled Gardens.

By plane: flights from Birmingham and Edinburgh to Shannon take 1 hour 15 minutes; and London to Shannon takes 1 hour 30 minutes. A taxi will take 2 hours to the hotel. Free on-site parking. Book flights to Shannon.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The façade of the castle hotel is imposing, promising interesting historical significance and a warm welcome - which it delivers. The extensive gardens add a touch of magic, whilst the interior is countryside chic blended with contemporary style. We loved the fountain outside which is lit up at night.

THE FACILITIES

The hosts are hands-on but in a good way - and are happy to give insight into the beautiful building as well as the surrounding area. The grounds are a big plus, tranquil and restorative when walking around with birds chirping - you really felt as though you were on holiday.

BED AND BATH

Rooms vary in size from Original to Castle Suites, and self-catering options are also available. Amenities are good, including iron and trouser press and nice-smelling toiletries. Expect neutral colours, wooden furniture and splashes of colour from scatter cushions and bedspreads. Some bathrooms have freestanding claw-foot baths.

Room types: Original, Standard, Superior, Castle Suite

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, hairdryer, tea and coffee facilities, TV, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

You can order à la carte or from the table d'hôte menu which changes regularly. There's plenty of choice including fresh local fish of the day and creative dishes like pork Wellington with apple cider sauce, which was really good. The Castle Pub is good fun with piano music, and popular with locals.

The Restaurant: fine dining, locally sourced produce, fresh fish and seafood. À la carte or daily Table D'Hôte menu. Open daily for dinner.

Castle Pub: Irish pub, buzzy atmosphere, live music. Open daily for lunch, dinner and drinks.
