Don Francisco García Rodriguez capitalized on the growth of tourism in the Canary Islands. However, he wanted to preserve the natural beauty of his home island and incorporated the native flora in the grounds of the three-star Hacienda San Jorge, which feels one part rural Finca to another part beach hotel.

Matthew covers the Canary Islands and beyond. He relocated to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the mid-Noughties. Since then Matthew has reviewed more Canarian hotels than anyone else. He champions the archipelago's gastronomic scene. Matthew rates this the equal of the Basque Country and Catalonia.

It's a five-minute drive from the island's airport to the hotel and roughly double that to the charming capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma. There's direct access to one of the island's most attractive playas, Los Cancajos Beach, and the heart of this understated resort is a mere stroll away. It's well worth driving a quarter of an hour to reach Restaurante Chipi-Chipi, the most emblematic of La Palma eateries.

By plane: flights from London take around 9 hours with a stop in Barcelona; flights from Birmingham take around 11 hours with a stop in Tenerife. The hotel is a 5-minute taxi ride from the airport. Free parking is available on-site. Book flights to La Palma.

Traditionally Canarian by design, there's a sophistication to Hacienda San Jorge's style. A laidback ambience is soundtracked by birdsong and the ocean. 10,000 square metres of botanic garden house 60 types of flora with 3,500 flowering plants. Higuera trees appear to bear avocados but their fruit actually makes maracas.

The Hacienda San Jorge is a smallish hotel with one check-in staff member, so a queue can develop. Thankfully, the fascinating surroundings draw your eyes to make a wait less terminable. A mini market in the lobby sells bread, pastries, fruit, veg, newspapers, and magazines. There is a small gym.
