OVERVIEW

An unexpectedly opulent little city centre hotel, conveniently situated for sightseeing in the heart of Edinburgh's clubland. Expect high-octane cocktails, low lighting and velvet-lined 'cabin' rooms to steal away to for a night of naughtiness, fuelled by milk and cookies delivered (like your breakfast) by the 'butler'.

OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Right in the heart of Edinburgh's Cowgate clubland, but the Grassmarket and much-photographed Victoria Street are a five-minute walk away; the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, and St Giles are a few minutes further. Turn right for the Scottish Parliament, Holyrood Castle and Arthur's Seat. Great bars, restaurants and some of the city's most popular clubs, like Cabaret Voltaire, are nearby; or for something a little more mellow, try the Jazz Bar.

By plane: flights from London to Edinburgh take 1 hour 25 minutes. The hotel is a 25-minute drive. Book flights to Edinburgh.

By train: 4 hours 30 minutes from London. The hotel is a five-minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley. Book trains to Edinburgh.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

You'll feel a frisson the moment you walk in the door: the star in your own film. It's not just laying the mood on with a trowel, it's a tour de force of intent with minute attention to detail, from the immaculate oak panelling to the lush, deepest blood-red velvet furnishings.

THE FACILITIES

You'll pay extra for the VIP 'Treat Me Like I'm Famous' service with gold tinfoil rose petals and the luxury chocolates from a well-known seashell brand, but also a personal visit from the bartender, mimosas with your breakfast hamper and a £50 bar tab. Not a VIP? Buzz for prosecco (or an ironing board).

BED AND BATH

Tiny, outrageous stage-set snugs in a perpetual twilight of dark, rich fabrics and dim lighting feature built-in sleigh beds and compact black and white marble-look wet rooms with heated floors. The only window is opaque glass brick, so you'll need to check the weather forecast to get dressed.

Room types: Cabin, Classic, Suite

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, Nespresso machine, hidden TV mirror, hand-built cocktail bar, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

There's a small, low-key bar at the entrance serving rock and roll-themed cocktails while Lilith's Bar, named for the Queen of the Damned, has a classy cabaret feel; around the corner, the Casablanca Bar features Drag Queens at weekends. Food-wise, it's just cookies until the breakfast hamper.

House of Gods cocktail bar & Lilith's Lounge: decadent bar and late night hideaway, serving cocktails. Open daily
