OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Just off the A849 that runs along the east coast of the island, the Isle of Mull Hotel & Spa has a spectacular location overlooking the ocean. Conveniently next to the Craignure ferry port connecting to Oban and just a 25-minute drive to Tobermory, it's perfectly-placed for weekend getaways and longer stays. Duart Castle is an excellent day out here; once the home of Clan MacLean, it's a dramatic clifftop castle well worth exploring.

By ferry: ferries operate between Oban and Craignure and the journey time is 45 minutes. It's a 2-minute drive (or 10-minute walk) to the hotel. Free parking on-site. Book a ferry.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The somewhat bleak 1960s exterior belies the simple but stylish interiors. It's all muted tartan carpets and cosy leather armchairs in the lobby, and bedrooms have contemporary furnishings with more tartan touches. It's got the country-house-by-the-sea vibe down to a tee, and the modern spa is spectacular, thanks to the sea views from the pool.

THE FACILITIES

Service was a little hit and miss and there were long waits over dinner when it was busy, but overall staff were keen to help and keep guests happy. The hotel offers an excellent room service menu for lazy mornings or quiet nights, and the spa is a real treat for anyone seeking relaxation.

BED AND BATH

Standard bedrooms are bright and airy, with sea-green notes on the furnishings and minimalist bathrooms, but the highlight is any room with a sea view. Some of the ground floor suites have private hot tubs outside on their patios and the Deluxe Sea View Feature rooms have gorgeous roll-top bathtubs.

FOOD AND DRINK

While the service was a little slow, the food did not disappoint here. Expect brilliant steaks on the grill, including a tomahawk to share and venison loin, and plenty of local seafood. Mull oysters, mussels from Inverlussa and even Isle of Mull cheeses are on offer here, paired with an excellent selection of wines.

Òran na Mara: bistro, local and seasonal produce. Dishes include lamb shank, North Sea octopus and plant-based haggis. All-day dining, open daily.

Sea Deck bar: open daily for light bites, afternoon tea and drinks. Food served 12-5pm.
