OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

A short walk up from the square in the appealing little town of Portree - the island's capital and a good base for touring, particularly the north end of the island. It's a paradise for hill walkers, with the Old Man of Storr and other-worldly Quiraing to the north; Cuillins is to the south. Head west for Dunvegan Castle, then on to the famous Three Chimneys restaurant for lunch. Or visit Michael Smith's Lochbay restaurant for fabulous seafood and sunsets.

By car: around 5 hours 15 minutes from both Glasgow and Edinburgh, and 8 hours 30 minutes from Manchester. Free parking on-site.

By train: trains run from Glasgow to Mallaig for the ferry to Skye, and from Inverness to Kyle, where you can take a bus to the island. Book trains.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Despite the 200-year difference between the house and the extension, the look is remarkably cohesive. Decorated in muted colours of the surrounding landscape in soft shades of sea, sky and granite, with the burnished golds of autumn, there's Scandinavian simplicity and relaxing restraint. Check in and feel your blood pressure fall.

THE FACILITIES

There's room service, a residents' lounge and an electric car charging point. The terrace, garden and picnic area are lovely. More importantly, nothing is too much trouble here, whether it's booking your tickets for the Raasay ferry or loaning you a swimsuit for a dip in the Fairy Pools.

BED AND BATH

How do you resist the allure of 300-thread sheets, a snuggle under Skye Weavers throws the colour of gorse, or sleek black and white bathrooms in black and white with forceful showers and Highland Soap Co. toiletries? Turn up the Bose Bluetooth speakers and hit the Nespresso machine hard.

Room types: Standard, Superior, Premier, Family

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, Nespresso machine, iron and ironing board, TV, Bose sound system, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

Dine and drink in the open restaurant area (with a wood-burning stove) or outside. Either way, there are five cuts of steak (and chargrilled watermelon) to follow a scallop ceviche or seafood sampler. There's also well-considered vegetarian/sides, like miso-glazed Roscoff onions with wild mushrooms. Breakfast is similarly bountiful.

Chargrill Restaurant: steak and seafood restaurant, locally sourced produce. Open for breakfast and dinner to residents and non-residents.
