Album: Foxy Shazam, Foxy Shazam (Sire/Warners)

Cincinnati sextet Foxy Shazam are the deranged, inspired rock'n'soul monster led by Eric Nally, a man with the face of D'Artagnan and the bravado of a backyard wrestler.

The Word On... Your Future Our Clutter - The Fall

"While he may be an old dog with a pickled onion for a head, Mark E Smith and The Fall are still capable of learning the odd new trick. Find proof as Smith becomes Prestwich's own Jim Morrison on 'Chino', or in the drones that glue the record together." - bbc.co.uk/music

Album: Tom Waits, Glitter & Doom Live (Anti-)

Seventeen songs lifted from 10 different venues on last year's US and European tours, and by no means a greatest hits.

Album: Rod Stewart, Sessions 1971-1998, (Rhino)

Four discs of out-takes, alternate versions and "lost" sessions, covering three decades of, some might say, diminishing artistic achievement.

Morrissey, Troxy, London

At London's Wireless Festival last year, Morrissey was a hilarious showman in easy command of his powers, alternating rollicking unreleased songs and Smiths favourites. That was the best I've seen him since his old band split. But just as the subsequent Years of Refusal ruined those good songs with an ear-splitting mix, Morrissey is in headstrong punk mode tonight. The lifelong New York Dolls fan stays fast and loud, as if fearful of the verdict his new album delivers on an old favourite band: "You Were Good in Your Time".

My Fantasy Band: Rob Thomas

Vocals - Robert Plant
But the Robert Plant from 1972. He had moves then that nobody else had and a voice that created what rock singers wanted to sound like from that point on. The lead singer has to be a good frontman and in his day he was the best.

<a href="http://blogs.independent.co.uk/independent/2008/09/mixtape-noel-ga.html" target="new">MixTape: Noel Gallagher attacked onstage</a>

Poor old Noel Gallagher. I may have recently declared him the wittiest man in music but it seems an aptitude for the rounded riposte can provide no defence from a Canadian clothesline. By John Hall

Album: Mick Hucknall, A Tribute to Bobby (simplyred.com)

As a fully-paid-up member of the Bobby Bland Adoration Society, my instinct, upon learning that Mick Hucknall had recorded an album of classic Bland material, was to bridle.

Album: T Bone Burnett, Tooth of Crime (Nonesuch)

Despite the competing claims of such as Mark Ronson and Brian (Danger Mouse) Burton, T Bone Burnett may be the most interesting producer working in popular music at the moment. Equally comfortable helming award-winning soundtracks for Cold Mountain, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Walk the Line, and reacquainting singers like Tony Bennett, Roy Orbison, Cassandra Wilson and kd lang with their roots, his manifold talents combined to powerful effect on last year's peerless Raising Sand collaboration between Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. But until 2006's The True False Identity, his packed diary left Burnett little time to pursue his own muse.
