Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The 2024 Grammy Awards took place on Sunday 4 February, with female artists dominating the major categories on a night dubbed ‘Year of the Women’.

Taylor Swift won Album of the Year for the fourth time, setting a new record. Song of the Year went to Billie Eilish for “What Was I Made For?”, while Record of the Year was won by Miley Cyrus for “Flowers”.

Earlier in the night, Swift took the opportunity to announce a brand new album, The Tortured Poets Department.

The ceremony’s live performances were also dominated by women, with legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell drawing an emotional reaction and a standing ovation. Other performers included Dua Lipa and Tracy Chapman, who memorably dueted with Luke Combs on a duet version of her hit “Fast Car”.

SZA had led the nominations with nine nods, and ended up winning three.

As awards ceremonies go, this was a night that truly had it all. Even a surprise cameo from Meryl Streep...

SZA wows with ‘Kill Bill'

SZA took out one of her dancers in a fantastic performance of her Grammy-nominated single, “Kill Bill”, which is up for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

No dancers were harmed in this performance. But SZA did slay.

Taylor Swift cracks up at NFL joke

Watch and learn, Jo Koy!

Trevor Noah just made a joke about Taylor Swift and the attention her romance with Travis Kelce has received from sports fans.

“I think it is so unfair how NFL fans have been complaining about the cameras panning to Taylor Swift, like she’s controlling the cameras at the game. Just let her live,” Noah said.

“In fact, tonight, on Taylor’s behalf, you know what I’m going to do? I’m gonna give her a break. Every time they mention Taylor Swift, I’m gonna get revenge. Every time someone says Taylor Swift, I’m gonna cut the cameras to someone who played football, that’s what I’ll do. Cut!”

As Noah yelled “cut”, the cameras switched to Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Terry Crews who played as a defensive end and linebacker in the NFL for years before retiring and pursuing a career as an actor.

“Oh yeah, you like that Terry Crews?” Noah continued as a totally bemused Crews looked around. “You better fix your face Terry!” Noah shouted.

Taylor Swift announces brand new album ‘The Tortured Poet’s Department'

So, Taylor Swift just won her 13th Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance, and took the opportunity to surprise and delight with the announcement of her “brand new album” -- you heard that right, it’s not a re-recording -- titled The Tortured Poet’s Department. And it’s out 19 April!

“Okay this is my 13th Grammy. Which is my lucky number... if I’ve ever told you that,” she said in her acceptance speech.

“I know that the way the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion from the fans. So I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I have been keeping from you for the last two years...

“Which is that my brand new album comes out April 19, it’s called the Tortured Poets Department, I’m going to go and post the cover right now back stage, thank you I love you.”

Lainey Wilson on performing ‘I’m Just Ken'

Backstage, Lainey Wilson was asked about her performance of “I’m Just Ken” with Mark Ronson at music mogul Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy gala.

Gosling was away with family and unable to participate, so Wilson stepped in.

“I feel more like Ken than Barbie for sure,” she told reporters. “I had just a few days to learn it but it was so much fun.”

Billie Eilish wins Song of the Year for ‘What Was I Made For?'

OK, I called it. Billie Eilish took home Song of the Year for “What Was I Made For?”, her contribution to the Barbie soundtrack, and is one step closer to that “Best Song” Oscar...

The 22-year-old singer saw off tough competition from music titans - Taylor Swift, SZA, Miley Cyrus, Lana Del Rey, Jon Batiste, Dua Lipa and Olivia Rodrigo - to claim the top prize.

After picking up the award, which honours songwriting, a shocked Eilish said: “Wow, oops, yikes, oh my god. Damn that’s stupid!”

She praised her fellow nominees as “incredible people, incredible artists, incredible music”.

Eilish also thanked the director of the Barbie blockbuster Greta Gerwig for “making the best movie of the year”, with the video cutting over to show Swift nodding in agreement.

While accepting the Dr Dre Global Impact Award, Jay-Z used his speech to call out the Grammys for never awarding his wife Beyoncé with the Album of the Year prize.

“I don’t want to embarass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year,” he said, referencing the “Crazy In Love” icon.
