Mercedes reveal trailer for Kimi Antonelli 'The Seat' documentary on Netflix

Teenager Kimi Antonelli sprung the surprise of the season so far by taking pole position for Saturday’s sprint race in Miami.

The 18-year-old Italian, just six rounds into his rookie campaign as a replacement for Lewis Hamilton, saw off championship leader Oscar Piastri by just 0.045 seconds at the Hard Rock Stadium.

Piastri’s McLaren team-mate Lando Norris finished third, 0.100 sec behind Antonelli, with Max Verstappen fourth and Antonelli’s Mercedes team-mate George Russell in fifth.

Charles Leclerc and Hamilton qualified sixth and seventh respectively for Ferrari.

No lottery tickets for Piastri

Piastri is clearly a bit miffed, saying on radio, “I don't think I will be buying any lottery tickets at this place.”

Piastri's engineer Tom Stallard says, “Save the luck for tomorrow, mate.” Wise words.

Verstappen down in 16th

Alex Albon has been noted for a provisional false start - that would be quite the blow after his fourth place finish.

Verstappen has finished 16th after that 10-second penalty for an unsafe release.

Norris makes up some ground on Piastri

“Lovely job, well done, boys” Norris says on race radio. The Brit was served well by that safety car and has shaved one point off his deficit to teammate Piastri.

Antonelli down to 11th (lap 18/18)

Bad day at the office for Kimi Antonelli as he slips to 11th.

We’re getting a McLaren one-two with Norris set to win from Piastri and Hamilton in third.

Safety car still in place (lap 17/18)

We’re going to finish behind the safety car as Alonso’s car is hauled off the track.

Antonelli asks on the radio is Piastri has been given a penalty for the Turn 1 incident, but doesn’t get the answer he was probably looking for.

'Mega job' - Hamilton (lap 17/18)

“Don’t sweat it, Kimi,” Mercedes say over the radio. The teenager did well to handle that mess in the pit lane.

“Great job on the pit,” Hamilton says over the radio, “Mega job”. Mega indeed as he sits in third, behind Norris and Piastri.

10 second penalty for Verstappen (lap 15/18)

Verstappen is slapped with a 10 second penalty for that unsafe release, clipping into Antonelli as the Mercedes attempted to pull in to pit.

We might have another incident to investigate as race control note a collision between Lawson and Alonso, leading to the latter crashing into the wall.

Norris into the lead (lap 15/18)

Norris had just enough time to take the lead from Piastri when the safety car was introduced.

It’s now Norris from Piastri, then Hamilton, Verstappen, and Albon.

Verstappen’s unsafe release is under investigation.
