'Painful but we have to learn from it' - Arteta on Arsenal's Champions League exit

Bayern Munich progressed to the Champions League semi-finals as Joshua Kimmich’s powerful second half header knocked Arsenal out of Europe.

With the tie delicately poised following a 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium last week, Kimmich thundered home the only goal of the second leg to give the hosts a deserved victory. A tight, tense affair had always looked likely to be settled by a single intervention, and the right-back provided it, surging from deep to latch on to Raphael Guerreiro’s cross and finishing with aplomb.

Bayern had twice struck the woodwork in quick succession earlier in the half, while Arsenal, despite having plenty of possesion, struggled to regularly test Manuel Neuer in goal. Defeat in Munich continued a damaging week for Mikel Arteta’s side, their Premier League hopes having taken a significant blow in a defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday.

But victory for Thomas Tuchel’s host kept their trophy hopes alive after Bayer Leverkusen secured the Bundesliga title at the weekend. The 3-2 aggregate win sets up an encounter with fellow heavyweights Real Madrid for a place in the Champions League final at Wembley.

A timely touch from Eric Dier, getting in just in front of Kai Havertz as Gabriel Martinelli whips in low towards Arsenal’s front man.

At the other end, a miscommunication almost sees Arsenal put through their own net, David Raya beaten by a pass back but able to breathe a sigh of relief as it trickles past the post.

A few uncharitable whistles from the Bayern Munich fans for Takehiro Tomiyasu, who had been forced to stop to replace a contact lens and caused a delay.

Superb goalkeeping from Manuel Neuer, ending up about 40 yards off his line to win a vital header in front of Gabriel Martinelli with the Brazilian haring after a long punt with Matthijs de Ligt beaten.

Thomas Tuchel has sent out some of his substitutes to warm-up. Might the Bayern boss be mulling a change?

Off the post twice! So nearly for Bayern Munich, a lovely ball from Joshua Kimmich nodded on by Leon Goretzka, beating David Raya but not the woodwork. Raphael Guerreiro lashes off a pair of Arsenal legs on the follow-up and strikes the outside of the same upright!

And Odegaard almost immediately blasts over the bar on the volley, troubling only the pigeons in the rafters.

Second half...

Martin Odegaard looks to have shaken off that knock, the Arsenal captain leading the chat in a final Arsenal huddle before the second half begins. No changes on either side.

HT: Bayern Munich 0-0 Arsenal

No goals, then, though a bright and breezy enough half in Munich. Arsenal have edged the midfield battle but Bayern have threatened with their pace and precision on the counter-attack - it was David Raya troubled with maybe the most testing save of the first 45 minutes, though neither goalkeeper has yet had the busiest evening. It’s still beautifully poised.
