'Painful but we have to learn from it' - Arteta on Arsenal's Champions League exit

Bayern Munich progressed to the Champions League semi-finals as Joshua Kimmich’s powerful second half header knocked Arsenal out of Europe.

With the tie delicately poised following a 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium last week, Kimmich thundered home the only goal of the second leg to give the hosts a deserved victory. A tight, tense affair had always looked likely to be settled by a single intervention, and the right-back provided it, surging from deep to latch on to Raphael Guerreiro’s cross and finishing with aplomb.

Bayern had twice struck the woodwork in quick succession earlier in the half, while Arsenal, despite having plenty of possesion, struggled to regularly test Manuel Neuer in goal. Defeat in Munich continued a damaging week for Mikel Arteta’s side, their Premier League hopes having taken a significant blow in a defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday.

But victory for Thomas Tuchel’s host kept their trophy hopes alive after Bayer Leverkusen secured the Bundesliga title at the weekend. The 3-2 aggregate win sets up an encounter with fellow heavyweights Real Madrid for a place in the Champions League final at Wembley.

Eric Dier waves the linesman’s flag for him as Gabriel Jesus goes too soon beyond the centre half. It mattered not a jot for Jesus’ finish was woeful, but Dier was right - the Brazilian was a couple of yards beyond him.

Kim Min-jae bundles into the back of Bukayo Saka. Free kick, 35 yards out, right-hand side.

Martin Odegaard curls for a teammate...and it goes skipping harmlessly out of play. Meanwhile, at the Etihad, Manchester City have equalised.

Tidy footwork from Jamal Musiala to allow him to unfurl a shot and draw a corner. It’s too shallow, though, and headed clear by Gabriel Jesus at the front stick.

But Neuer is fouled at the subsequent set piece.

A first corner of the game for Arsenal, and Manuel Neuer doesn’t do a great job of dealing with it, he and Noussair Mazraoui contriving to concede a corner with no visiting shirt particularly nearby.

William Saliba is forced to hurry a clearance behind after Leroy Sane’s shot is blocked. Another Bayern goal would surely seal it.

Eric Dier has been very good tonight, the Tottenham loanee scarcely putting a foot wrong. Another excellent challenge prevents Arsenal building further from a promising attack.

A double change for Arsenal: Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard replace Jorginho and Gabriel Martinelli. Kai Havertz moves into a deeper role.

Here’s that Bayern Munich opener:

Bayern are flying. Leroy Sane has the chance to make it two in quick succession as Noussair Mazraoui dances and darts up the left, but Sane leans back as he strikes and puts his shot some distance over the crossbar.

GOAL! BAYERN MUNICH 1-0 Arsenal (Joshua Kimmich, 64 minutes - 3-2 agg.)

Powered home!

A thumping header from Joshua Kimmich! Leroy Sane gets to the byline and crosses beyond Harry Kane, leaving Raphael Guerreiro to pick up the pieces. Guerreiro has time to put his foot on it and pick out his man, spotting Kimmich arriving with purpose from deep. Kimmich booms into the ball, sending it clattering into the top corner and the crowd into raptures. Bayern lead!
