'Painful but we have to learn from it' - Arteta on Arsenal's Champions League exit

Bayern Munich progressed to the Champions League semi-finals as Joshua Kimmich’s powerful second half header knocked Arsenal out of Europe.

With the tie delicately poised following a 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium last week, Kimmich thundered home the only goal of the second leg to give the hosts a deserved victory. A tight, tense affair had always looked likely to be settled by a single intervention, and the right-back provided it, surging from deep to latch on to Raphael Guerreiro’s cross and finishing with aplomb.

Bayern had twice struck the woodwork in quick succession earlier in the half, while Arsenal, despite having plenty of possesion, struggled to regularly test Manuel Neuer in goal. Defeat in Munich continued a damaging week for Mikel Arteta’s side, their Premier League hopes having taken a significant blow in a defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday.

But victory for Thomas Tuchel’s host kept their trophy hopes alive after Bayer Leverkusen secured the Bundesliga title at the weekend. The 3-2 aggregate win sets up an encounter with fellow heavyweights Real Madrid for a place in the Champions League final at Wembley.

Leon Goretzka slides in to make certain as Gabriel Jesus runs the channels. Into the final 60 seconds of the signalled four minutes.

Bayern boot the ball long. Anywhere will do. David Raya is on the halfway line, hurling the ball to Declan Rice to allow him to take the throw quickly.

A free kick! And Arsenal take it quickly, Ben White in behind...but unable to force a chance. Corner. Everyone, Raya included, is in the Bayern box.

Oh, Leandro Trossard, why haven’t you crossed? Arsenal have men up there as the Belgian is found on the left, but he tries to cut in to create a better angle and is denied by Harry Kane, fouling the England striker in the process. Gabriel Jesus is booked for dissent.

Arsenal howl for a penalty, and the whistle blows...but for offside. I don’t think it was a spot kick, anyway, but Eddie Nketiah had strayed earlier in the sequence.

Joshua Kimmich is booked for a foul on Kai Havertz. Do or die time for Arsenal.

Eric Dier pilfers the ball from Martin Odegaard and off go Bayern Munich. Konrad Laimer, on to Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala...tame. David Raya scoops it up.

Four added minutes between the hosts and a Champions League semi-final.

Harry Kane wins a flick on and Jamal Musiala bursts beyond Declan Rice. Musiala drives and tries to contort a chipped finish with his right foot, but can’t beat David Raya. Might a natural left-footer have managed to square for Leroy Sane?

At the other end, Martin Odegaard ruffles the side netting via touch off both defender and keeper. Each goes unspotted, though, by the officials - to Odegaard’s fury, it’s a goal kick.

Dayot Upamecano replaces Leroy Sane as Thomas Tuchel attempts to see this out.

Matthijs de Ligt is fouled. A waste.

A funky turn from Gabriel Jesus, who gets a brush from Jamal Musiala and goes down. A free kick with a chance to load the box, and Eddie Nketiah will be on to part of it - the striker replaces Takehiro Tomiyasu as Martin Odegaard prepares to deliver.

Arsenal’s only shot of the half so far was that Martin Odegaard volley moments after the resumption. They just can’t find anything.

Ben White whipes out Raphael Guerreiro petulantly. A booking for the right back.

Mikel Arteta gesticulates on the touchline, urging his side on. Arsenal have eight minutes plus stoppage time to find an equaliser and take us to extra time.
