Amorim praises Man United duo in emphatic Athletic Club victory

Brentford defeated Manchester United 4-3 to bring the visitors back down to earth after they named their youngest-ever Premier League starting line-up.

Just three days after United’s brilliant 3-0 win at Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals, Ruben Amorim stuck to his word by naming a much-changed team but his side took an early lead through Mason Mount.

It was one-way traffic from there, however, with Brentford levelling via a deflection from Luke Shaw and Kevin Schade’s header putting Thomas Frank’s side in front before half time. Schade added his second following the restart, with Yonna Wiisa continuing his excellent season by notching a fourth.

Alejandro Garnacho got one back late on with a spectacular finish, with Amad Diallo pulling another back in stoppage time, but it was not enough to prevent a 16th defeat of the Premier League season. Brentford, meanwhile, kept their slim hopes of qualifying for Europe alive, while United turn their attention back to Thursday’s second leg against Athletic and attempting to reach the Europa League final.

Brentford 4-2 Manchester United, 90 minutes

A timely tackle from Sepp van den Berg as Chido Obi shows off some of his burgeoning talent.

Seven additional minutes, a figure not received well by the home fans.

Towards the final moments we hurry. Igor Thiago almost catches out Altay Bayindir as he dallies in the box.

Brentford 4-2 Manchester United, 86 minutes

A key intervention from Leny Yoro, Yoanne Wissa surging away and looking to link up in familiar fashion with Bryan Mbeumo. The young French centre-half is back to cut it out intelligently.

Brentford 4-2 Manchester United, 84 minutes

We have seen Manchester United pull off a couple of heists in Europe this season, but surely there is too much to do here? The band of travelling fans have lifted the volume in hope rather than expectation.

Alejandro Garnacho takes a tumble and asks for a penalty, though I don’t think Anthony Taylor had a great view of it - and it looks as if he’s gone down easily, anyway.

GOAL! Brentford 4-2 MANCHESTER UNITED (Alejandro Garnacho, 82 minutes)

A late twist? A delicious goal from Alejandro Garnacho!

A nice one-two with Christian Eriksen allows Garnacho to skip inside in a trademark manner along the edge of the area and curl delightfully past Mark Flekken.

Brentford 4-1 Manchester United, 81 minutes

Into the final 10 minutes we creep, the Brentford fans in excellent voice as their side get set to move back into the top half of the table. This will be a third win on the spin for the Londoners.

Three changes. Michael Kayode, Mikkel Damsgaard and Keane Lewis-Potter take leave as Kristoffer Ajer, Gustavo Nunes and the injury-plagued Igor Thiago come on.

A final change from Ruben Amorim, shuffling the deck chairs as they steam towards a 16th iceberg of the Premier League season with defeat beckoning again. Victor Lindelof on for Tyler Fredricson.

GOAL! BRENTFORD 4-1 Manchester United (Yoanne Wissa, 75 minutes)

Four! Yoanne Wissa finishes off a lovely move and Brentford are flying!

An 18th of the season for the forward, matching the tally of teammate Bryan Mbeumo. A lovely little pass from Mikkel Damsgaard to help set it up, with Michael Kayode making an excellent run and producing the right pass...but was there an offside in there? The VAR is having a look...and it’s a long check. There are two different incidents to check, first Kayode and then Wissa - still we wait...

Given! Both men onside, and the goal stands.

Brentford 3-1 Manchester United, 73 minutes

That’s Kevin Schade’s last act of the day, with Thomas Frank and he sharing a brief (and seemingly jovial) exchange of words as the Brentford boss denies the winger a chance to chase a hat-trick. Rico Henry is on in his stead.

GOAL! BRENTFORD 3-1 Manchester United (Kevin Schade, 72 minutes)

A second for Kevin Schade and that may seal it!

Bryan Mbeumo has had a bitty afternoon but he conjures a cross here, cutting back on to his left boot. There’s a deflection on it to send it looping up, and Schade again shows his impressive aerial acumen to head home his third of the week and second of the afternoon to extend Brentford’s advantage.
