Amorim praises Man United duo in emphatic Athletic Club victory

Brentford defeated Manchester United 4-3 to bring the visitors back down to earth after they named their youngest-ever Premier League starting line-up.

Just three days after United’s brilliant 3-0 win at Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals, Ruben Amorim stuck to his word by naming a much-changed team but his side took an early lead through Mason Mount.

It was one-way traffic from there, however, with Brentford levelling via a deflection from Luke Shaw and Kevin Schade’s header putting Thomas Frank’s side in front before half time. Schade added his second following the restart, with Yonna Wiisa continuing his excellent season by notching a fourth.

Alejandro Garnacho got one back late on with a spectacular finish, with Amad Diallo pulling another back in stoppage time, but it was not enough to prevent a 16th defeat of the Premier League season. Brentford, meanwhile, kept their slim hopes of qualifying for Europe alive, while United turn their attention back to Thursday’s second leg against Athletic and attempting to reach the Europa League final.

Top stop! Altay Bayindir gets in the way when Christian Norgaard directs goalwards from very close range. A stumble and a tumble take him close to the goalline but he successfully gathers before it crosses. Manchester United clinging on a bit.

Three added minutes to be played at the end of the half.

Sloppy from Manuel Ugarte. The midfielder gives the ball away in really poor fashion and then tugs back Michael Kayode. He accepts a booking without complaint.

Good save from Altay Bayindir! Brentford penetrate down the left-hand side, Kevin Schade cutting inside Tyler Fredricson and firing low towards goal. Bayindir keeps it out.

Schade again tests the young defender and secures a corner.

Michael Kayode twice seems set to wind up for another launch into the Manchester United box only to instead throw short, though Keane Lewis-Potter can’t pick out a target with a resultant cross.

Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 38 minutes

It’s been a lively enough game of football, though Brentford have definitely had the better of it. Manchester United’s young side feel like they need the interval.

De Ligt won’t be able to continue, the Dutch defender clearly quite sore. Enter Harry Maguire, hero of Bilbao.

GOAL! BRENTFORD 2-1 Manchester United (Kevin Schade, 34 minutes)

Two in two for Kevin Schade! Manchester United are furious but the goal is given!

The visiting players halt as Matthijs de Ligt goes down with a leg injury after a clash with Yoanne Wissa, yet Anthony Taylor waves play on. And play on Brentford do, working the angles effectively to create a crossing opportunity. Schade rises like a stag out of a wheat field, high above the rest as he heads home.

Brentford 1-1 Manchester United, 33 minutes

It was a really good reaction from Brentford to the opening goal, resetting swiftly to put the pressure on. They are beginning to push again.

There wasn’t much that Altay Bayindir could have done about that goal, but the goalkeeper’s distribution has been far from ideal so far. One wonders what might have happened with Andre Onana this season had Bayindir taken more of his opportunities in the side when they have come - it feels like he hasn’t quite seized the shirt in the way that another goalkeeper might have done given Onana’s occasional errors.

GOAL! BRENTFORD 1-1 Manchester United (Luke Shaw own goal, 28 minutes)

An equaliser! It looks like a deflection off Luke Shaw but Mikkel Damsgaard will claim it!

It all comes from a Michael Kayode long throw, with the full-back reacting well after his initial hurl is cleared. His hard work puts the ball back into the box where Damsgaard fires goalwards with a Shaw touch making certain that it is bound for the back of the net. I think the effort was bound for goal anyway...but it has gone down as a Shaw own goal!
