Amorim praises Man United duo in emphatic Athletic Club victory

Brentford defeated Manchester United 4-3 to bring the visitors back down to earth after they named their youngest-ever Premier League starting line-up.

Just three days after United’s brilliant 3-0 win at Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals, Ruben Amorim stuck to his word by naming a much-changed team but his side took an early lead through Mason Mount.

It was one-way traffic from there, however, with Brentford levelling via a deflection from Luke Shaw and Kevin Schade’s header putting Thomas Frank’s side in front before half time. Schade added his second following the restart, with Yonna Wiisa continuing his excellent season by notching a fourth.

Alejandro Garnacho got one back late on with a spectacular finish, with Amad Diallo pulling another back in stoppage time, but it was not enough to prevent a 16th defeat of the Premier League season. Brentford, meanwhile, kept their slim hopes of qualifying for Europe alive, while United turn their attention back to Thursday’s second leg against Athletic and attempting to reach the Europa League final.

Brentford settle back into their passing game, Keane Lewis-Potter connecting with Kevin Schade. But that’s superb defending from Tyler Fredricson, standing up to the tricks of the forward and knocking the ball out of play off him, too, to earn a throw-in.

Elsewhere, meanwhile, Wilson Odobert has struck early for Tottenham against West Ham. No goals as of yet between Brighton and Newcastle.

Such is the wind at Brentford that Ruben Amorim has added an extra layer, a jacket draped over the gilet already sported by the ever-fashionable Manchester United manager.

A good defensive header from Kobbie Mainoo allows Manchester United to launch another forward movement at speed, with Manuel Ugarte niftily working his feet well. Mason Mount is squeezed out, though.

It’s just cooled a little in London today, the wind getting up to add to the chill after a balmy week of weather across the United Kingdom. The surface at the Gtech Community stadium looks immaculate.

Brentford are not happy when referee Anthony Taylor whistles for a free kick when the hosts had seemingly secured a corner after the ball burst free from a thicket of bodies.

Well well well. Just as against Athletic Bilbao, Manchester United have had to soak up a bit of early pressure but lead in the opening stages. Brentford will be ticking after a promising start.

GOAL! Brentford 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED (Mason Mount, 15 minutes)

A first Premier League goal of the season for Mason Mount!

Wonderful work from Alejandro Garnacho in the build-up, and Manchester United strike early. A quick break from halfway after a poor clearance from Mark Flekken affords Garnacho time and space, and Mount has the simple job of side-footing home.

Thomas Tuchel has made his way to the Gtech Community Stadium, with the England manager casting his eye over a couple of current squad contenders and perhaps a few more who will be in time.

A first stretch of the legs for Chido Obi, Manchester United’s youngest Premier League starter. Nathan Collins shuts him down easily and then draws a free kick.
