Chelsea’s Emerson denies fan £250,000 jackpot with 94th minute Champions League goal

The Italy defender’s late strike prevented a clean sweep for one supporter in the Sky Sports game

Emerson Palmieri’s stoppage-time strike for Chelsea in their 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid denied one supporter a £250,000 windfall.

A supporter playing Sky Sports’ Super Six competition was on the verge of netting the six-figure sum after predicting the exact scoreline in five other matches leading up to the Champions League round of 16 second leg.

As the match developed following Hakim Ziyech’s opener, word spread to the studio about how Alan Davies, of Birmingham, was on track for the huge win.

Tim Sherwood was commentating on the game, which saw Stefan Savic shown a red card and seemingly end the Spaniards’ hopes of working their way back into the tie, while severely reducing their chances of getting on the scoresheet.

And despite Chelsea dominating the contest and wasting several glorious chances and positions to add to their lead, Mr Davies was precariously on course for an enormous win.

But Italy left-back Emerson raced clear in the 94th minute of the game, driving past Jan Oblak with virtually the last kick of the match to dash his hopes, with Sherwood heartbroken after watching the move unfold.

Sherwood called the closing seconds of the game: "They're breaking away here, let's hope they do not score, Chelsea are breaking away, it comes... Emerson, oh no!”

Presenter Julian Warren filled the apparent agony in the room, as Sherwood, Lee Hendrie and Matt Murray appeared dejected for the supporter, collapsing on the desk in front of them: "We need to stress this is nothing against Chelsea, if you're just joining us, they're through to the quarter-finals, but it's a Super Six player, who needed no more goals to win £250,000, but that goal has denied them a quarter of a million pounds, if they're a Chelsea fan, I wonder how they're feeling right now, well they've lost £250,000"

The fan still managed to pocket £6,000 as a consolation prize, having named five correct scores while still adding a correct result with the Blues winning on the night at Stamford Bridge.
