Everton snatched a point against Tottenham after Jarrad Branthwaite’s stoppage-time equaliser in a dramatic 2-2 draw in the Premier League.

The Toffees fought back twice after Richarlison’s sublime brace to deny Spurs in their bid to pull level with north London rivals Arsenal in third.

Sean Dyche’s side showed immense character to fight back, first through Jack Harrison and then Branthwaite’s brave header at the far post in the 94th minute, colliding with Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario as the ball hit the back of the net.

The Toffees move outside the relegation zone temporarily, on goal difference, with Luton Town dropping into the bottom three.

Everton’s spirit and a Pep Guardiola lesson undo wasteful Tottenham

Just when it seemed as though Everton’s past would cost them on the pitch as well as off it, they illustrated the spirit they will require to extricate themselves from their latest perilous position. Once Richarlison was their saviour, a hero of the late surge to safety in 2022. When he marked his first return to Goodison Park with a double, it appeared as though he was pushing them towards relegation two years later.

Yet Tottenham left disappointed for the second time in as many seasons, denied by another injury-time goal from a centre-back. It was Michael Keane with a spectacular strike in April, Jarrad Branthwaite with a close-range header now. Behind twice, without a league win since December, Everton nevertheless claimed a point that could be pivotal.

They did so in a manner that should prove worrying for Tottenham. Both of Everton’s goals came from dead-ball situations, with the unconvincing Guglielmo Vicario providing the first evidence of frailty he has shown in English football. Having conceded 27 times in 14 games, Spurs may have a soft underbelly, brilliantly as Micky van de Ven played. They certainly squandered the winning position Richarlison gave them.

Everton 2-2 Tottenham

Everton’s next game is away to Manchester City in the early kick-off next Saturday. That’s followed by fixtures against Crystal Palace, Brighton, West Ham, Manchester United and Liverpool.

Though a potentially worrying run of games, Everton fans should be confident of avoiding the drop if they regularly play like they did today.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Sean Dyche said he was “very pleased” with the result.

“I thought we were very good at least for most of the game. the will, the desire was on show, and I thought it was the right outcome.”

“Today I thought it was the least we deserved, and the fans played their part.”

Regarding set pieces, he says that Everton need to incorporate set pieces into their normal game. He also calls Spurs a fantastic outfit.

“When the 10 points came along, every Toffee went ‘they need us now’. We’re stretched but they’re seeing everyone leave it all out there. There was a good mixture of fight and quality.”

Speaking to TNT Sports, Ange Postecoglou says that he was “pretty disappointed, particularly conceding so late.

“Pickford pulled off two or three good saves, we got two but just couldn’t get the third.”

Speaking on Richarlison, he added: “Richy has been good for a while, not just his goals but his general all-round play. All the lads put in a solid shift today.”

FULL-TIME! Everton 2-2 Tottenham

The ref blows the final whistle with Spurs on the attack, but there were no chances after the equaliser. Overall the result is probably a fair one, though Spurs will feel the more disappointed of the two teams.

Everton are out of the bottom three for now, though there are some worrying signs regarding the lack of quality in attack. Spurs stay in the top four, and will be rueing a chance to cement their league position.
