Liverpool vs Arsenal LIVE: Premier League result, final score and reaction as Gunners stay top for Christmas
Jurgen Klopp was left frustrated in a 1-1 draw as Mikel Arteta’s side stayed top of the Premier League for Christmas
Liverpool were held by first-placed Arsenal to 1-1 at Anfield in the English Premier League on Saturday.
Arsenal led through Gabriel's fourth-minute header but Mohamed Salah evened the score in the 29th. Salah's 151st Premier League goal moved him to 10th on the all-time list. Liverpool pressed hardest in the second half and hit the woodwork twice. Mikel Arteta's team will go into Christmas at the top of the standings, with Liverpool a point behind in second.
Defending champion Manchester City is likely happiest with the result after seeing two of its title rivals drop points. City, which fell to fifth while it was away winning the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia this week, is six points behind Arsenal with a game in hand.
Another title challenger, Aston Villa, also dropped points with a surprise 1-1 draw against Sheffield United on Friday. Liverpool has drawn back-to-back games in the league against Manchester United and Arsenal.
Jurgen Klopp's team had the better chances to win on Saturday; Trent Alexander-Arnold hit the bar in the second half with only Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya to beat. Substitute Harvey Elliott also hit the post with a deflected shot from outside the box. Relive all the action from the blog below and get all the latest football odds and tips here.
29 - GOAL! - Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal
Liverpool back on level terms!! Alexander-Arnold sprays a magnificent pass, 50 yards or more over Zinchenko’s head, onto the toe of Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian cuts back inside Zinchenko and lets rip with a magnificent strike, into the near top corner - 1-1 at Anfield!
26 - Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal
Jones strides forward but his shot is blocked. Good opening for a moment, but he hesitated over a pass or shot and eventually didn’t make the most of it. Konate is again called in to intercept on the slide as Martinelli sprints forward. On another viewing, that certainly looked a penalty on Odegaard’s handball.
22 - Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal
A short free-kick goes to Salah and as he attempts to dribble into the box he appeals for handball - Odegaard the closest to him. There’s a lengthy VAR check but it’s not given; the Norwegian certainly touches it with his hand but there’s nothing doing for referee or any other officials for that matter.
Odegaard at the other end shoots wide with his right foot; Salah clips a cross then towards Gakpo but it’s just too high for the forward. Konate makes a great tackle to halt Martinelli’s exciting run; it’s much more end to end now and the tempo is only increasing.
18 - Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal
Liverpool turning up the temperature a little with some decent moves down the flank, but the Arsenal centre-backs stand firm. Jesus goes in late on Tsimikas and is maybe lucky to not see a yellow, but the hosts are quickly on with the game.
Szoboszlai’s turn now to turn to the crowd and ask for more, as Liverpool seek a quick route back into terms on the scoreline.
Gakpo initially does well with a long pass, but Saliba sees him off and it’s back with Raya - the Dutch forward needs to do a lot more today, despite his midweek goal.
14 - Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal
Martinelli runs at the Liverpool centre and feeds in Jesus, but his strike on the run is wild and high, well over Alisson’s crossbar.
At the other end Endo’s cross is met by Gakpo and it drops for Salah - he fires into the side-netting though on the volley. Perhaps should hav done slightly better.
11 - Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal
Diaz gets into the action for the first time, beating White but seeing Saliba block his cross into the six-yard box. From the corner Tsimikas can’t find a teammate though - the Colombian forward tries to whip up the home crowd a little more.
8 - Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal
Liverpool yet to really get started and Arsenal are pushing them everywhere. Jones’ attempted pass is almost cut out and Havertz looks to go for goal but Alisson can get there.
Moments earlier, a quick VAR check cleared Tsimikas a red card appeal from Arsenal, after a stray arm caught Saka in the head. Wasn’t a foul, just a coming together in the eyes of the ref.
4 - GOAL!’ - Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal
Another set piece, same outcome - this time it’s in! Odegaard floats a free-kick from the left, Gabriel rises highest and flicks an effort near post - this time Alisson is nowhere near it and the Gunners are ahead!
1’ - Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal
We’re underway! Good start from the Gunners - Saka attacks down the right and crosses low, it’s half-cleared and goes straight back in, deflected behind for a corner. Gabriel flicks the set-piece at goal at the near post but Alisson saves.
