Guardiola rates 'excellent' Haaland and Isak seasons

Omar Marmoush scored a sensational first-half hat-trick to sink Newcastle United as the Egyptian announced himself at Manchester City.

Substitute James McAtee added a late fourth as City made light work of their visitors, although the day was not perfect for Pep Guardiola as Erling Haaland limped off near the end with what appeared to be a right knee injury, just four days before City’s Champions League play-off second leg in Madrid.

The result propelled City to fourth in the table and saw Newcastle slip back to seventh.

70 min: Anthony Gordon is replaced by Callum Wilson, while Jeremy Doku comes on for the hat-trick hero Omar Marmoush. The Etihad stands to applaud – could that earn Marmoush a start against Madrid at the Bernabeau?

63 min: City are taking their time over throw-ins and free-kicks as they try to take any last sting out of the game. They have given up a few leads this season so no one at the Etihad is entirely comfortable yet...

Day to forget for Trippier

This match may have been decided by Marmoush with a quarter of an hour of brilliance. Newcastle put up too little resistance and, in their search for a response, Eddie Howe hauled off Kieran Trippier - who was at fault for the opener - and Joe Willock at the break. Trippier was terrific against Arsenal nine days ago but his immediate opponent had a hat-trick before half-time here. That doesn't reflect well on him.
