Guardiola rates 'excellent' Haaland and Isak seasons

Omar Marmoush scored a sensational first-half hat-trick to sink Newcastle United as the Egyptian announced himself at Manchester City.

Substitute James McAtee added a late fourth as City made light work of their visitors, although the day was not perfect for Pep Guardiola as Erling Haaland limped off near the end with what appeared to be a right knee injury, just four days before City’s Champions League play-off second leg in Madrid.

The result propelled City to fourth in the table and saw Newcastle slip back to seventh.

Half-time: Man City 3-0 Newcastle

City keep control all the way to the whistle and they lead by three goals at the break thanks to Omar Marmoush’s rapid hat-trick.

Man City 3-0 Newcastle

44 min: Newcastle have got their collective foot on the ball and will be relieved just not to be doing more defending. Can they pinch something before the half-time whistle?

Man City 3-0 Newcastle

40 min: A glimpse for Newcastle as Ederson misjudges a cross and it reaches Bruno in the box, but he can’t quite direct the header on target.

Man City 3-0 Newcastle

36 min: Marmoush has been ruthless and we haven’t even talked about Savinho, who is having a brilliant game too, tearing Lewis Hall apart. Meanwhile Phil Foden and Erling Haaland have barely been needed.

This is extraordinary. Savinho dribbles at Lewis Hall down City’s right side and pulls it back to Marmoush, who fires home his third from the penalty spot. First-half hat-trick!

Marmoush arrives at the Etihad

A superb seven minutes for Omar Marmoush and Manchester City. The £59m man didn't score in his first four appearances. His City account has been opened emphatically and impressively in the fifth. His lobbed opener was terrific. It also gave Ederson a third assist of the season in the Premier League. Which, to put it another way, is one more than Phil Foden has.

Man City 2-0 Newcastle

26 min: Savinho drives towards the box, jinking inside before playing a one-two with Foden and shooting for the far corner, but Dubravka gets down to make the save. City are all over Newcastle right now.

Another! Marmoush takes the ball from Gundogan on the left side of the box and then drags it on to his right foot before firing a low finish past Dubravka. It’s a really well-taken goal.

Man City 1-0 Newcastle

21 min: Khusanov is showing a few signs of nerves, perhaps, and requires Stones to bail him out after a mistake which Guardiola very deliberately and publicly applauds.
