In the red and white heat of the first top-flight Pennines derby to be played at a packed Elland Road in 19 years, victory was always likeliest for whichever one of these historic rivals kept their cool. The occasion demanded that Manchester United play on the edge and they almost came careering off it, at one point surrendering a two-goal lead in the space of 59 seconds. It briefly seemed this would be another collapse to add to Ralf Rangnick’s growing collection.
Instead, it was the first time that they have lost a lead and regained it under his management and an important lesson that no setback is insurmountable. Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes’ pair of first-half goals should have made this much-welcome win over Leeds United more comfortable than it was, but two strikes by substitutes Fred and Anthony Elanga made it comfortable all the same.
Leeds’ thrilling fightback - led by Rodrigo and Raphinha - was in vain. It seemed that Elland Road’s patrons could leave celebrating one of the most memorable wins in their recent history during the frenetic moments after that quickfire double. Anything seemed possible for a team driven by a loud and ferocious crowd. But having already taken the sting out of the occasion once, United knew they could do so again and did so again with a quiet, impressive air of composure. 45+6 mins: A killer blow for Leeds on the stroke of hal-time as they went chasing an equaliser. It was a quick counter from Man Utd with a good cross from Sancho and a decent finish by Bruno Fernandes. The visitors take a two goal lead into the break and will be confident of getting more goals in the second half.

45+5 mins: Great counterattack from Manchester United! Victor Lindelof is the driving force for the visitors as he sprints through midfield with the ball and a helpful one-two. He takes it all the way to the penalty area before knocking it wide to Jadon Sancho who hangs a cross in the six-yard box and finds Bruno Fernandes. He heads the ball into the wet turf and squeezes it underneath the goalkeeper to put Man Utd two goals up in the first half!

45+3 mins: Chance for Leeds as the win a free kick about 30 yards out from goal. The set piece is floated into the middle of the area but Cristiano Ronaldo is back to win the defensive header.
Leeds are ending the half well. They’re pressing Man Utd high and being physical in midfield. The ball comes up to Mateusz Klich who shoots from outside the box but puts the effort high and wide.

45 mins: A Dan James cross from the right skips through the box and comes all the way to Aaron Wan-Bissaka before the defender clears the danger.
There’s going to be six minutes of added time to play in this half after the injury to Robin Koch.

43 mins: Oh wow. Leeds look nervous as a free kick for Man Utd is flicked into the box. It should be an easy take for the goalkeeper but Cristiano Ronaldo makes a run after the ball and Diego Llorente thinks he has to deal with it. He dinks it over his own keeper and for a moment looks like he’s scored an own goal but the ball bounces wide of the post.

40 mins: Junior Firpo chips a cross into the box and picks out Matuesz Klich who lays the ball off to Adam Forshaw. He shoots first time but scuffs his effort and puts the ball wide of the near post.

37 mins: Manchester United have slowly taken control of this game over the last 15 minutes or so. Paul Pogba has been brilliant for the visitors and that goal will do wonders for Harry Maguire’s confidence.
Chance! Jadon Sancho collects the ball just outside the box after a Ronaldo shot is blocked and rebounds out to him. Sancho shifts it to the left and hits a snapshot at goal but sends the effort over the bar!

34 mins: The visitors take the lead! Luke Shaw swings the Manchester United corner into the penalty area. Harry Maguire tussles with Diego Llorente but gets in front of the centre-back, jumps towards the ball and fires a solid header past Illan Meslier into the back of the net. Good goal from Man Utd!

33 mins: Save! Pogba receives the ball from a throw in and flicks it over Forshaw’s head before sliding a pass along the front edge of the box to Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes rolls the ball onto his right foot and shoots sending a curling effort towards the right-hand post but Illan Meslier leaps to his left and palms the ball wide of the post!

30 mins: Robin Koch is down again. He sat down off the ball and it looks like he’s having a concussion check now. The Leeds medical staff help him off the pitch. It’s unlikely he’ll play on now, he does look a little dazed.
Junior Firpo is quickly stripped and comes on to replace the Leeds midfielder.
