Manchester City vs Newcastle LIVE: Premier League result, final score and reaction after Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva goals
Man City 2-0 Newcastle: Phil Foden shines to help City overcome Newcastle
Manchester City moved to within two points of league leaders Arsenal after seeing off Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon.
Included in the starting line-up for the third consecutive game Phil Foden shone for the hosts with a combination of fanciful footwork and an eye for goal which saw him open the scoring after 15 minutes. City then tried to dictate the tempo of the game but Newcastle created chances of their own.
Eddie Howe’s men have only scored three league goals since the turn of the year and that lack of confidence was on display as Sean Longstaff, Callum Wilson and Joelinton all let opportunites to score slip by. A trio of substitutes threatened to bring Newcastle back into the game in the second half but it was a City sub that dealt the knockout blow.
Bernardo Silva replaced Kevin De Bruyne and just two and a minutes after his introduction earned the hosts the second goal they were after. From their it was plain-sailing for Pep Guardiola’s men who have put the pressure on title rivals Arsenal ahead of their fixture with Bournemouth.
Relive the action as Man City defeated Newcastle in the early Premier League kick off:
Man City 0-0 Newcastle
12 mins: Danger! Ilkay Gundogan dummies a shot and wins a free kick as Bruno Guimaraes takes him out with a trailing leg. The free kick is about 20-yards out and right in front of goal.
Kevin De Bruyne hits it and smokes the shot over the crossbar!
Man City 0-0 Newcastle
9 mins: Nearly! Bruno Guimaraes slides a lovely pass through midfield and picks out Anthony Gordon on the left wing.
Gordon - making his first league start for Newcastle today - carries the ball into the penalty area and misses it when he tries to shoot under pressure from Kyle Walker.
Walker’s inclusion in the City team today was probably to counter the threat of Allan Saint-Maximin but he’s done a good job of throwing Gordon off balance there.
Man City 0-0 Newcastle
6 mins: Newcastle win the first corner of the game and swing the ball over to the back post. Jamaal Lascelles jumps over Jack Grealish to win the initial header which he sends into the six yard box.
Callum Wilson is hovering but City manage to clear the danger before the ball reaches him.
Man City 0-0 Newcastle
3 mins: Chance! Dan Burn launches a long throw into the Man City box but the home side clear their lines and break up the pitch. Erling Haaland finds Kevin De Bruyne who bombs down the left side.
The cross comes into the penalty area where Ilkay Gundogan leaps into the air and nods his effort over the crossbar!
