Manchester United vs Everton LIVE: Premier League result and final score after Fernandes and Rashford goals
United kept their faint top-four hopes alive with a win over relegation-threatened Everton
Manchester United returned to winning ways in the Premier League as a pair of first-half penalties, both won by Alejandro Garnacho, helped Erik ten Hag’s side to a 2-0 victory over beleaguered Everton at Old Trafford.
Injury-hit United were sloppy throughout the contest but were gifted two spot-kicks through Everton mistakes. Garnacho was first kicked by Everton captain James Tarkowski in the box before the winger was tripped by Ben Godfrey. Bruno Fernandes put the first penalty past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford before United changed their taker for the second, with Marcus Rashford successfully converting against his England teammate.
Everton never looked like scoring as their winless run extended to 11 games in the Premier League, deepening the club’s relegation fears. United remain sixth but victory was needed to get their top-four push back on track, following defeats to Fulham and Manchester City.
Re-live the clash between Manchester United and Everton below.
Manchester United 2-0 Everton
49 min: Once again, as in the first half, Everton take advantage of United’s weak area in the centre of the pitch, as Harrison drifts inside and collects a pass before driving at goal. He passes to Godfrey arriving on the overlap down the right, but Godfrey sprays the ball wastefully behind goal. Sean Dyche throws his arms in the air.
Everton have been excellent at getting into the final third and terrible at deciding what to do when they get there.
Manchester United 2-0 Everton
47 min: Bruno Fernandes slides in Garnacho on goal, but he’s offside. That was Bruno’s fault, for me – he took too long to release the ball and the winger had already made his run.
Kick-off! Manchester United 2-0 Everton
We’re back under way at Old Trafford.
Half-time: Manchester United 2-0 Everton
That was a strange half. Everton were the better team for the first half an hour or so, and didn’t necessarily deserve to be trailing. But the second goal seemed to derail them, and United could well have scored a third before half-time.
This game is not over by any means, but Everton need to refind their composure in the second half and take one of their chances which will inevitably come along, because this United team are a generous bunch.
Half-time: Manchester United 2-0 Everton
It should be three! McTominay plays a brilliant pass through for Garnacho driving in from the right side, who is in on goal. Garnacho delays, which allows the chasing Branthwaite back but a dummy sends the defender to the floor. But instead of pulling the trigger, the winger takes another touch and it’s too heavy, allowing the supine Branthwaite to flick the ball to safety with his toe. A big chance missed.
And that’s half-time.
Manchester United 2-0 Everton
45+2 min: Four minutes will be added on and United are continuing to press for a third goal. This time Lindelof tries his luck from the edge of the box, but it’s straightforward for Pickford to stop.
Manchester United 2-0 Everton
45 min: Another big penalty appeal from United! Garnacho pulls the ball back from the byline and a sliding Mykolenko blocks it with his arm. The contact isn’t in doubt, but Simon Hooper believes the Everton defender was using his arm to assist his slide and waves play on. VAR doesn’t disagree.
Manchester United 2-0 Everton
41 min: Garnacho dribbles at Mykolenko but loses control and the defender clears the ball into touch. A moment later, United’s goalkeeper Onana tries a throughball to Rashford making a run inside from the left side, but Everton’s centre-backs crowd him out on the edge of the box.
Manchester United 2-0 Everton
39 min: Pickford launches a free-kick from the halfway line into the United box, but it’s simply dealt with.
GOAL! Manchester United 2-0 Everton (Rashford pen, 36)
Marcus Rashford takes a long, slightly curious run-up featuring sidesteps, little mini steps, a hop, and finally a firm finish into the left side of the goal. Pickford goes the other way, and it’s 2-0.
