Tottenham beat Manchester United 2-0 with an impressive display in their first home game under new manager Ange Postecoglou.

An entertaining first half ended goalless but Spurs came out quickly in the second and took the lead through midfielder Pape Sarr, who pounced on a deflected cross to fire into the roof of the net from close range. Later a flowing move found substitute Ben Davies arriving in the box, whose shot was diverted in by United defender Lisandro Martinez.

It capped the perfect start to Postecoglou’s reign at home, while for Erik ten Hag the game suggested there are plenty of problems to solve before the transfer market shuts in 10 days’ time.

Tottenham 2-0 Manchester United

90+3 min: Not much to say here. Spurs fans are belting out “Oh when the Spurs, come marching in...” On the pitch, Tottenham are looking the more likely to create a chance. United seem like they just want to go home.

Tottenham 2-0 Manchester United

90 min: Fernandes crosses to the far post where Casemiro’s header is aimed straight at Vicario, and he’s offside anyway. There will be nine minutes added on, and honestly there could be 19 and I’m not sure United would make headway.

Tottenham 2-0 Manchester United

88 min: After the goal, Rashford was replaced by Pellistri and Mount was switched for Martial.

For Spurs, Solomon and Royal replace Kulusevski and Porro.

86 min: Shaw’s cross is cleared away as United try to pile on some pressure. Spurs look very comfortable and the stadium is bouncing. Who’d have thought the first home game of the post-Kane era would be this joyous?

GOAL! Tottenham 2-0 Manchester United (Martinez og, 83 min)

Ben Davies surely clinches the win! It’s some lovely football in the build-up, with Maddison sweeping the ball out to Perisic on the left. He plays a pinpoint pass for the arriving Davies to tap home from close range – with the help of a big deflection from Lisandro Martinez. It’s going to go down as own goal, unfortunately for Davies.

Tottenham 1-0 Manchester United

75 min: Fernandes’s long pass goes straight to goalkeeper Vicario. Spurs will make another change: Pape Sarr, who could well be the matchwinner, is replaced by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Tottenham 1-0 Manchester United

73 min: Christian Eriksen slips receiving a pass from Onana and almost concedes a shocking goal! He’s lucky to have a few teammates around him and Spurs get only a corner out of the situation. Maddison bends in a dangerous outswinger which Sarr heads across goal, but United clear their lines.

Tottenham 1-0 Manchester United

71 min: Sancho gets his first taste of the ball, skipping down the left wing away from a couple of challenges before Romero comes across to stop him. United haven’t look threatening at all in this second half – Rashford has been extremely quiet – but perhaps their changes can shift the momentum.
