Tottenham beat Manchester United 2-0 with an impressive display in their first home game under new manager Ange Postecoglou.

An entertaining first half ended goalless but Spurs came out quickly in the second and took the lead through midfielder Pape Sarr, who pounced on a deflected cross to fire into the roof of the net from close range. Later a flowing move found substitute Ben Davies arriving in the box, whose shot was diverted in by United defender Lisandro Martinez.

It capped the perfect start to Postecoglou’s reign at home, while for Erik ten Hag the game suggested there are plenty of problems to solve before the transfer market shuts in 10 days’ time.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana: “We had some big chances and we didn’t score, and in the end we paid. We made some mistakes and against good opponents, you pay. Every goal I look at myself. In the end we have to keep calm, keep working. I’m very positive.”

Ange Postecoglou: “We put on a show and showed the team we want to be. There’s a long way to go but I really liked what the players did today.”

Spurs captain Son Heung-min speaks to Sky Sports:

“Every manager is different, I will always respect them. As an attacking player, when you press high you are much closer to goal when you win the ball. I like doing my defending high up.

“I will play any position, left, right, centre. I’ll do anything for the team.”

And there’s a hint that he prefers life under Postecoglou than Antonio Conte.

“It’s more enjoyable for the Spurs fans, we are playing high and pressing high, it’s more fun for the players... well I don’t know about the defenders!”

“James Maddison looks like he was born to play in that shirt,” says Jamie Redknapp.

Meanwhile, in shock news, Roy Keane is not happy. “Man Utd are the new Spurs. Second half, weak, no leadership, bad goals. Spurs were lovely, played well. But they’re bringing on Martial, these players – they’re not going to get you back into the game. The biggest insult I can give them is that they’re easy to play against.”

Evidence of an open game: Tottenham had 17 shots and United had 22, while both had six on target. United edged expected goals but Spurs dominated posession, and those stats barely tell the picture of just how dominant Spurs were in the second half.

For United, this was more evidence that they don’t look quite at it at the start of this campaign, following an iffy first win over Wolves. The midfield in particular looks a bit lightweight off the ball, and seems to my mind like they could do with the physicality of Scott McTominay. Rashford was quiet, Bruno was off, Garnacho isn’t having any impact and Antony is just not a very good player at this level. Other than that...

A great evening for Tottenham. Ange Postecoglou’s attacking playing style has brought lots more entertainment on the pitch and you can sense the fans are excited, even in this post-Kane era. Spurs rode their luck at times in the first half but played with a swagger in the second, and were deserving of their win.

90+8 min: This will be just about the last action of the game – Bissouma clatters Pellestri on the edge of the box and United will have a free-kick. Bruno and Shaw look interested...

Tottenham 2-0 Manchester United

90+6 min: Gary Neville gives Yves Bissouma man of the match and it’s hard to argue with that, though I thought James Maddison was also excellent. Bissouma seems to have fresh confidence under the new manager and the entire club feels buoyed by the new, more positive style of play Ange Postecoglou has quickly established.
