Spain vs Argentina LIVE: Tokyo 2020 result, final score and reaction from Olympics fixture
The final group stage match will determine which nations progress to the knockouts and aim for the gold medal
Spain face Argentina in the men’s football at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday, with both nations needing a positive result to ensure they continue their journey in Japan.
The Europeans have so far won and drawn, but despite dominating long stretches of their matches they have been unable to click in attack, scoring just once so far - they are top of the group heading into the final 90 minutes, and need just a draw to guarantee a top-two finish. Argentina have it slightly more difficult, after defeat to Australia earlier in the group stage. They did recover to beat Egypt, but the lay of the group means they have to win this match to go through - anything less and they will be out, regardless of the result from the other match.
The race for medals looks set to be a tight one and there have already been plenty of surprise results - but to even have a chance at success, a big performance from both sides is required here.

Tokyo Olympics: Team USA win historic 3x3 basketball gold
History in Tokyo as the US women’s 3x3 basketball team win the first ever Olympic gold medal in the sport .
The US have just beaten the Russian Olympic Committee 18-15 in the inaugural final.
The ROC will get a second chance for gold in the men’s final - which is coming up shortly.
Tokyo Olympics: Daiki Hashimoto wins gold for Japan in men’s all-around
No doubt about it, 19-year-old Daiki Hashimoto has become one of the home stars of the Tokyo Olympics.
Tokyo Olympics: Daiki Hashimoto wins gold for Japan in men’s all-around
That’s stunning from Hashimoto, and the 19-year-old is celebrating as if he is the Olympic champion! What will the score be? It’s 14.933! He’s won the gold medal! What a final. It came down to the very last routine.
1) Hashimoto (JPN) - 88.465
2) Xiao (CHN) - 88.065
3) Nagornyy (ROC) - 88.031
4) Sun Wei (CHN) - 87.798
...
8) James Hall (GBR) - 84.598
9) Joe Fraser (GBR) - 84.499

A slight step on dismount for Nagornyy, but that was another insanely good routine. What will the judges think? No! It’s 14.366 and he’s fallen short.
Hashimoto needs 14.533 to become Olympic champion.
Also, I believe James Hall and Joe Fraser have done enough to secure their spots in the top 10. They will be eighth and ninth respectively.

Sun Wei is first up, and he matches Fraser’s score of 14.400 on the high bar. Xiao, the current leader, is next, and he lands a twisting dismount before punching the air in celebration.
Xiao gets a 14.066. Will it be enough? It certainly opens the door for Nagornyy - he’s up next and needs at least 14.400, with Hashimoto to come after.
Tokyo 2020: Spain 1-1 Argentina
Full time!
Spain hold off Argentina, who simply can’t find a way through to find a second goal. It always looked beyond them, in truth - a real lack of cutting edge from both teams today.
A point is good enough for Spain to finish top, combined with Egypt beating Australia, but for Argentina the medal hopes come to a disappointing end.
Final Group C standings:
- Spain, 5pts
- Egypt, 4pts (+1 GD)
- Argentina, 4pts (-1 GD)
- Australia, 3pts

Joe Fraser and Artur Dalaloyan wrap up their rotations on the high bar - with a pair of remarkable routines. Fraser sticks an ambitious dismount and matches the best score of the day so far on that apparatus with 14.400. That moves him to 84.499, which keeps him behind team-mate Hall.
James Hall, over on the floor routine, scores a 14.466 to finish on 84.598 overall. That might be good enough for a top 10 finish.
Now, here come the top four...
Tokyo 2020: GOAL! Spain 1-1 Argentina
GOAL! 87’ mins
There’s the equaliser! A corner is met by Tomas Belmonte and he buries it with a fine header - 1-1 now and suddenly there’s the chance of a late turnaround. Three minutes plus injury time to go, Argentina need to score one more.
Tokyo 2020: Spain 1-0 Argentina
85’ mins
Oscar Gil is booked for Spain - their first of the game and he’ll be suspended for the quarter-finals. New Spurs signing Bryan Gil is coming on for Dani Olmo. Gaich has a really good chance for an equaliser but completely air-kicks as a low cross reaches him, then Eric Garcia almost scores an own goal and Simon has to make a fine save.
It’s all over in the other game - Egypt have scored on the counter-attack to lead Australia 2-0. As long as Argentina don’t make a dramatic late comeback here, it’s Egypt who will join Spain in the last eight.
Tokyo Olympics: Men’s individual all-around latest
So its Ruoteng Xiao who leads the men’s individual all-around with one rotation remaining. Nagornyy set a big score of 15.400 on the parallel bars but it wasn’t enough to move into first. Hashimoto in third has a good record on the horizontal bars - and there is nothing to separate the medal contenders! Who can hold their nerve?
James Hall and Joe Fraser and 11th and 12th respectively.
1) Xiao (CHN) - 73.999
2) Nagornyy (ROC) - 73.665
3) Hashimoto (JPN) - 73.532
4) Sun Wei (CHN) - 73.398
5) Kitazono (JPN) - 72.115
