Springbok Faf de Klerk: “Tt's great to be back in Yokohama!”

South Africa turned on the second-half heat as they ran in a total of nine tries in a dominant 63-21 win over Italy in their Test at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

The Springboks scored seven tries after the break as they wore down their hosts with relentless forward play to post their first win on their autumn tour, after losing narrowly in Ireland and France over the last weeks

Kurt-Lee Arendse scored two tries and there was one each for Bongi Mbonambi, Cheslin Kolbe, Kwagga Smith, Malcolm Marx, Steven Kitshoff, Damian Willemse and Cobus Reinach with Kolbe adding two penalties and a conversion and his replacement Manie Libbok kicking over five conversions.

Italy’s two tries were scored by Ange Capuozzo and Lorenzo Cannone, with Tomasso Allan putting over three penalties and a conversion.

TRY! Italy 21-49 SOUTH AFRICA (Kitshoff, 69 mins)

The Springboks straight back to work though. Italy try to play from deep but the ball pops loose from the grasp of David Sisi on the floor, South Africa collect and pop a couple of passes that end with the flame-haired Steven Kitshoff burning his way across the whitewash.

The Boks are unstoppable from that range and Libbok adds the conversion.

TRY! ITALY 21-42 South Africa (Lorenzo Cannone, 66 mins)

And they do make the most of the platform! It started in their own 22, they made great ground and Allan used a penalty advantage to put a crossfield kick in that Ioane collected.

From ten metres out, they drive to within a couple of inches and Lorenzo Cannone dives over from the base. Well deserved for the Azzurri and the young No 8 has played really well, so it’s nice to see him get a try. Allan’s conversion slips wide though.

The crowd are still into this game, desperately urging their side on. Italy break into the South Africa half and this is a good attacking platform

TRY! Italy 16-42 SOUTH AFRICA (Marx, 62 mins)

Boks win a five-metre lineout and they’re knocking on the door again. Maul trundles towards the line with Malcolm Marx directing traffic from the back along with Faf De Klerk.

It goes all the way over the line and Marx drops down for a simple score. Conversion is about five metres in from the left touchline and Libbok puts it just wide. He’s played really well since coming on though.

WATCH: Kolbe’s try straight from kick-off

Brilliance by Cheslin Kolbe straight from the restart got South Africa an all-important try.

Italy 16-37 South Africa, 60 mins

Willie Le Roux just chews up metres with a carry as Italy are starting to look really tired. There’s a few flicks out of the back of the hand and offloads from the Springboks as they’re tyring everything now. Libbok is looking particularly dangerous.

Big carry by Etzebeth and Italy temporarily get the ball back but quickly squander it again. Boks five metres out when a loose pass finds touch. Brief respite for Italy who win the lineout and can boot clear. Barely out of their 22 though.

TRY! Italy 16-37 SOUTH AFRICA (Smith, 54 mins)

The floodgates have opened now.

Powerful carry after powerful carry by the Springboks eventually blasts a hole in the Italian defence. Replacement back-rower Kwagga Smith picks up from the base of a ruck, snipes through the gap and barrels his way over under the posts. Sheer power by the Boks.

Libbok does the necessary with the simple extras. This game has got away from Italy in the second half, with the Boks replacements doing serious damage.

Italy 16-30 South Africa, 52 mins

A slew of changes for South Africa but big names like Malcolm Marx and Vincent Koch coming on.

Italy finally get their hands on some ball and run a couple of phases. They win a penalty and although Allan misses touch, the Boks clearance will still give them lineout ball in opposition territory. Ah... They try a short one to the front but it’s stolen by South Africa.

TRY! Italy 16-30 SOUTH AFRICA (Arendse, 48 mins)

South Africa motoring now as Arendse has his second score.

It’s almost straight from kick-off again. The Springboks work the ball up the field including a big carry from Etzebeth that takes three men to bring him down, then go wide to the left. Great flat lines by Willemse and Le Roux create the overlap, Kolisi straightens to stop the covering last man Capuozzo making the tackle and completes the pass for Arendse to go over in the corner.

Manie Libbok was the man who came on for Kolbe and he gets kicking duties handed to him - immediately nailing the conversion from the left touchline.

TRY! Italy 16-23 SOUTH AFRICA (Kolbe, 46 mins)

Oh no - this is a disaster for Italy! But brilliance by Cheslin Kolbe.

A try straight from the kick-off. Damian Willemse hangs the kick-off around the 22, Morisi doesn’t even get off the ground and Kolbe leaps like a salmon to pluck the ball out of the air and run in from the score. Simply brilliant by the winger.

The only bad news for South Arica is that he hurts his hamstring during that score and gets immediately subbed off. De Klerk also misses the conversion but a nerve-settling try for the Boks.
