OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

The Hilton sits just to the south of the River Tyne, by the iconic Tyne Bridge. While its location means you avoid the late-night noise of Newcastle's bars and clubs, it is slightly removed from the action. Still, it's only a very short taxi ride or easy stroll over the Swing Bridge to get to the Quayside and Newcastle city centre. The Hilton is an easy walk from major arts venues like the Sage and BALTIC Centre, and minutes from HWKRMRKT's weekend street food market and Träkol's elevated barbecue-style cuisine.

By car: the hotel is 5 hours 20 mins from London, 2 hours 45 mins from Manchester and 2 hours 30 mins from Edinburgh. Paid private parking is available on-site.

By train: London Kings Cross to Newcastle takes around 3 hours. The hotel is a 10-minute taxi ride from the station. Book trains to Newcastle.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

From the moment you walk into the airy lobby, you'll know that this hotel is all about the view, with full-height windows extending through to the bar and restaurant. The rest of the decor plays it safe - pale wood, cream walls, white bedding. It's a little worn in some areas but bright and spacious overall.

THE FACILITIES

The Hilton Gateshead is the Great North Run's HQ hotel, so it's no surprise that there's a small gym, indoor heated pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room on site. There's a useful left luggage service, plus a wide range of meeting rooms and (for Hilton Diamond members and guests staying in an Executive room or suite) an Executive Lounge stocked with drinks and snacks.

BED AND BATH

The Hilton Gateshead rooms are well-equipped, ranging from Standard up to Executive Suite, several of which are wheelchair accessible. All are en-suite, with Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries and over-bath showers; some also have (very small) separate showers. Around half of the rooms - mainly Deluxe and Executive ones - have river views. Note that Wi-Fi is not included in rates.

Room types: Double, Queen, King, Twin

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom, Crabtree and Evelyn products, TV, blackout curtains

FOOD AND DRINK

The Windows on the Tyne restaurant serves a generous breakfast, ranging from grab-and-go pastries and fruit to Full English breakfasts. At dinner, the seasonally changing menu is eclectic, though the panoramic river view is perhaps more of a draw than the food. The adjacent bar makes a chic and comfortable spot to sip a cocktail and watch the city light up across the water each evening.

Windows on the Tyne Restaurant: modern European cuisine. Open Mon-Fri for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and breakfast and dinner at weekends.
