Despite being just a ten-minute walk from Ilford Road metro (five stops to Central Station), the hotel manages to feel secluded. It's poised between the Jesmond Dene river valley and the upmarket attractions of Jesmond proper, giving you a taste of both town and country and a well-connected base for exploring more widely. A stroll in the Dene is a must, as is a visit to Jesmond's popular independent cafés - try Café 1901, Ouseburn Coffee Co or Arlo.

By car: the hotel is 5 hours 40 mins from London, 3 hours 40 mins from Birmingham and 2 hours 50 mins from Manchester. There is free parking available on-site.

By train: London Kings Cross to Newcastle takes around 3 hours. The hotel is a 15-minute taxi ride from the station. Book trains to Newcastle.

The buildings' original features have been carefully maintained and incorporated into the design, accented with comfortable modern touches. There are a few small signs of wear, but that's to be expected from a longstanding local institution.
