OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

The Moxy is on Omonoia Square, with the metro station under a minute's walk away. Omonoia has long been considered a gritty neighbourhood, but in the last couple of years has been transformed, with exciting new hotels and shops coming to this up-and-coming district. The hotel is close to cultural attractions such as the popular Plaka district and the Acropolis. It's near Syntagma Square and Ermou Street, where there are lots of shops, restaurants and bars.

By plane: direct flights to Athens take less than 4 hours from London and Manchester. It's less than a 45-minute drive to the hotel. Parking costs €36 per day. Book flights to Athens.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Moxy hotels have a playful, relaxed attitude. For example, there's no formal reception or check-in desk, you just pull up to the bar - and are given a welcome cocktail on arrival. The bar has seating wrapped around it and there's a quieter lounge area with colourful, funky décor, some graffiti-style walls and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out to a pleasant streetside outdoor terrace. The terrace has a plant wall, pale green metal seating and tables, and is lined with plants to shield it from traffic.

THE FACILITIES

This is a minimal service and facilities hotel, where you serve yourself much of the time, and that's reflected in the room rates. There's a lower and upper lounge, terrace, bar area (which takes food orders) and a fitness centre with cardiovascular equipment, free weights and strength equipment. There's a small business centre (two computers) in the upper lounge, which is called 'the library', although few books are in evidence.

BED AND BATH

The ultra modern and chic rooms are spacious enough for this price category. They're tech-savvy, with smart technology, HD televisions and a motion-activated LED guidelight below the comfortable bed. There's a funky artwork on the wall, a desk area and a lounge chair. The shower rooms are compact but stylish. However, the air-con controls are badly designed and hard to operate.

Room types: Backstage Room, Center Stage Room, Moxyfied Triple Room, Moxyfied Suite

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, mini fridge, TV, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

The Moxy chain is known for its 24/7 self-service grab-and-go concept. Fast food is served here, but it's good quality and surprisingly cheap for a city centre hotel. Options include beef and chicken burgers, pizzas, hummus and olives. You can eat and drink at the bar or there is seating outside, both by the bar area and on a separate terrace by the street. There's also a quieter lounge area with a large dining table and various sofas and chairs.

Moxy Bar: informal, quirky bar and lounge. Buffet breakfast and fast food. Open daily.
