Located in Porto's neighbour across the river Douro, Vila Nova da Gaia, where the port used to be stored in warehouses, The Yeatman is, essentially, an homage to wine. The pool is decanter-shaped, there are around 30,000 bottles in the cellar, and the spa is dedicated to vinotherapie, using active grape extracts in certain treatments.

Vila Nova da Gaia is separated from Porto itself by the impressive iron Dom Luis bridge, constructed in 1886 by a student of Gustave Eiffel. The hotel is just a fifteen-minute walk away from it, set back from the main road in its own quiet, expansive grounds. You can easily reach Vila Nova's buzzy waterfront down several sets of steps leading from the hotel gardens, where there are dozens of cafés, bars and restaurants. Head to the Esplanada do Telerifico bar in the Jardim de Morro, where you can toast the sunset with a white port and tonic, looking out over the colourful houses on Porto's Cais de Ribeira waterfront.

By plane: flights to Porto take around 2 hours 25 mins from London. The drive to the hotel takes 30 minutes. On-site parking costs €20 per day. Book flights to Porto.

The style is classic and elegant, with a vast, airy marble-floored entrance, atmospheric photos and paintings related to wine on the walls, a dramatic main staircase, and pale, soothing tones throughout. Each storey gives onto that incredible view, so whether you're in the ground-level bar and restaurant, or the spa, you'll still gaze out over a profusion of pretty terracotta-tiled roofs.

The expert, efficient, knowledgeable staff can arrange any number of excursions or activities and are only too happy to recommend sights in Porto and help book tickets. The hotel also offers a range of different packages, from gastronomic to romantic. As well as the pool and spa, there is a fitness centre.

The spacious, marble-tiled bathroom is separated from the main room by a set of shutters, so you can still enjoy the view while lying in the bath.
