OVERVIEW

This was Downtown Manhattan's first luxury boutique hotel and continues to impress, with its sassy decor, fab location and bustling bars and restaurant areas. It may not have a spa or pool, but it makes up for this with a killer vibe, 24-hour fitness centre and other amenities, such as free use of bikes and a knowledgeable concierge service.

OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Haute bohemian scene central, located on the edge of SoHo and TriBeCa neighbourhoods between Broadway and Sixth Avenue, the hotel is a short distance from a number of rated boutiques, restaurants, bars and clubs. Washington Square, the Brooklyn Bridge and Canal Street can all be found within a 20-minute walk of the hotel. Several downtown neighbourhoods including Greenwich Village and Nolita are close by.

By plane: flights to New York take 6 hours 50 mins from London and Edinburgh, and 7 hours 10 mins from Manchester. The hotel is one hour's taxi ride from JFK airport. Private parking from $65 per day. Book flights to New York.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Popular with celebrities and housed in a 17-storey red-brick tower, the hotel's design evokes SoHo from both the 1870s and 1970s. Both brick and concrete floors, cast-iron detailing and brick pillars give an industrial-chic look, softened by bright fabrics, antique mercury mirrors and numerous artworks.

THE FACILITIES

Service is good, unsurprisingly, and as well as a selection of eateries/bars there's a small 24-hour fitness centre with treadmills, StairMasters, exercise bikes and weights. There are complimentary bicycles available for three hours a day. There's a concierge, and MacBooks and iPads are available on request.

BED AND BATH

The hotel's rooms and suites are not the largest you'll find in New York, and some are a bit gloomy, but the decor is sassy with an understated industrial-chic style. Everything from copper tables to leather headboards adds to the charm, and bathrooms feature pleasing white subway tiles.

Room types: Deluxe, Grand, King, Suites, One and Two Bedroom Suites, Loft

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom, bathrobe, hairdryer, tea and coffee facilities, TV, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

The hotel's Soho Diner pays homage to the great American dining staples, while there's a diverse all-day menu in the Grand Bar and Salon. There's also outdoor space, Gilligan's, with a tropical-inspired plant-filled patio. The Club Room is ideal for an evening snack or cocktail.

Grand Bar & Salon: all-day American dining. Open daily 8am until late. Dishes from $18.

SoHo Diner: modern American fare. Open daily 8am until late. Mains from $21.
