The Locust and the Bird, By Hanan Al-Shaykh

Locked into marriage at 14, Hanan Al-Shaykh's mother Kamila pined for the glamour of movies and poetry – and for her true love, the musical, romantic youth Muhammad. In this remarkable leap of imagination and empathy, the Lebanese novelist reverses the usual optic of family memoirs by recreating her mother's headstrong but stardust-sprinkled journey through life.

Album: Serena-Maneesh, No 2: Abyss In B Minor (4AD)

Ever since his school music teacher played his charges The Velvet Underground's "Heroin", Emil Nikolaisen, leader of Norwegian band Serena-Maneesh, has had an affinity for sonic extremity, pushed to the limit on this follow-up to their 2006 debut.

Album: Animal Collective, Fall Be Kind (Domino)

A generously-proportioned five-track EP, Fall Be Kind employs the same loop-based methods as Animal Collective's popular Merriweather Post Pavilion, but here used to create a more crepuscular, aptly autumnal atmosphere.

Yo La Tengo, The Roundhouse, London

Yo La Tengo have a certain way with a song. It can be trundling along nicely but not necessarily grabbing you, when a sound emerges that makes your ears prick up and suddenly all the divergent parts of the music come alive and the song becomes great. In their opening track, "My Heart's Reflection", it's James McNew's rumbling bass; in their second, "More Stars Than There Are in Heaven", it's Ira Kaplan's guitar solo followed by McNew's sweetly pitched backing vocal, that bring their songs into sharp, brilliant focus.

Album: Mercury Rev, The Complete Peel Sessions, (Universal)

Mercury Rev are the kind of group for whom Peel Sessions were originally conceived: an all-channels-open, questing outfit who took the opportunity to reassess old favourites and break virgin territory.

Album: Sonic Youth, The Eternal, (Matador)

You really have to hand it to Sonic Youth: album number 15, with the band's mainstays all in their fifties really is some time for a band to hit their peak.

Album: Sigur Rós, Von (Smekkleysa)

Reissued for the first time outside of their native Iceland, Von is Sigur Rós's 1997 debut.

Album: Animal Collective, Merriweather Post Pavilion, (Domino)

Accosted by Leslie Crowther in the supermarket aisle and cajoled into doing the taste test, you'd swear that 'Merriweather Post Pavilion' was a Mercury Rev record.

Album: Pavement, Brighten the Corners, (Domino)

From 1994-1999, nobody wanted to hear American music.

Sigur Ros, Alexandra Palace, London

Sigur Ros, Iceland's favourite musical sons, played the first of their two sell-out London gigs at Alexandra Palace last Thursday. The band filled the venerable old pavilion with their panoramic sound to the delight of all present.

Album: Indian Jewelry, Free Gold (We Are Free)

For a bunch of wayward hippies there is something completely savage, hypnotic and nocturnal about the psychedelic rumbles of this Houston, Texas-based ensemble.
