Golden Globes 2024: Stars walk red carpet

The Golden Globes returned with a blowout, star-studded ceremony on Sunday (7 January) night.

The annual, Beverly Hills-based awards show has been obscured in recent years after a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation revealed that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the awards’ voting body) did not have a single Black member.

However, this year, the Globes were back in their usual Sunday slot on CBS and hoping to regain viewers. Broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, A-listers including Taylor Swift, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence and Kylie Jenner brought some much-needed stardust to the beleaguered show.

Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things and Anatomy of a Fall were among the films to earn multiple awards. Christopher Nolan won his first Globe following six nominations while Barbie was surprisingly pipped to Best Picture in the Musical/Comedy category Poor Things.

Meanwhile, Beef, The Bear and Succession were the big winners in the TV categories.

Jo Koy, who got the hosting job just two weeks ago, struggled to impress

At the start of the ceremony, New York Times journalist Nicole Sperling tweeted that a “prominent director” could be heard condemning comic Jo Koy from the crowd. “[We] are all here and this is what they give us?” they allegedly said. “This is a disaster”. Yikes.

Jo Koy’s Harry and Meghan joke

Jo Koy didn’t exactly have people in stitches all night, but one gag that did go down well was this one. “Harry and Meghan Markle got paid millions for doing absolutely nothing – and that’s just by Netflix,” he told the crowd.

Jokes about Barry Keoghan’s penis in Saltburn and the runtime of Oppenheimer didn’t quite have the same effect.

In her speech, the most powerful of the night, she spoke in Blackfeet then in English, paying tribute to her “beautiful community”. “This is an historic win. Taylor Swift purses her lips over joke at her expense

“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL?” struggling host Jo Koy asked the crowd. “On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift... there’s just more to go to here.”

The musician was not keen on the joke, which referenced her attendance at NFL games to watch her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight-end Travis Kelce.

The Epstein joke

The audience at the ceremony was left wincing when US comic Jim Gaffigan cracked a joke about Hollywood stars being named in the newly released legal documents linked to paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein. Before he presented an award, he quipped: “This is so exciting for me. The Golden Globes – I can’t even believe I’m in the entertainment industry. I can’t. You know, it’s so unlikely. I’m from a small town in Indiana. I’m not a paedophile. I don’t know if that’s a new category here, but...”
