9 best autumn winter lipsticks
From pillar-box red to deep pinot noir, go bold for the new season
It's a bold lip this season and it's not for the faint-hearted. But if shades like hot red or rich cranberry aren't your look, the nude lip is also sticking around from summer. And finally, after seasons of creamy mattes, the gloss is back. They’re universally flattering, so go plump and high-shine on the pout if gothic berry reds are too much.
1. Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in MotorHead: £16, Debenhams
Gothic glam, meaning dark pouts with the blackest of black cherry lips, is one of the most significant lip trends this season. Seen at Marni, Max Mara and Erdem, you can get the look with this bold blackberry satin-sheen lip shade from Kat Von D.
2. L'Oreal Paris Color Riche Gold Obsession Lipstick in Plum Gold: £6.99, Boots
Get the high-shine, lacquered, deep purple hue seen at Dior with this slightly iridescent Plum Gold from L'Oreal Paris – it gives a seriously glossy, plumped-up lip look. This is a high-end luxury lippie formula at an affordable high street price.
3. Delilah Colour Intense Cream Lipstick in Whisper: £24, Space NK
The nude lip was seen accompanying a soft neutral eye at Tory Burch, an intense black cat eye at Julien Macdonald, fresh faced radiant skin at Missoni, copper smokey eye at Salvatore Ferragamo, smudgy morning-after fawn eye at Chloe and graphic eyeliner at Kenzo and Iceberg. It appears the nude lip goes with everything this season. Get the look with this creamy matte, paraben-free, cruelty-free, vitamin E packed lip treat from boutique British brand Delilah.
4. Urban Decay Mega Matte Vice Lipstick in 714: £15, House of Fraser
A matte bold Eighties red lip at Joseph, a blurred Seventies glam-rock red at House of Holland and a true red gloss at Roksanda. However you like your red, let it pop against clean radiant skin, whether you're going out or just going to the gym. Tip: smudge it with a tissue for a rock’n’roll worn-in look. This lipstick from Urban Decay is highly pigmented and has incredible glide-on performance, especially for a matte lipstick. 714 is creamy and rich but intensely matte.
5. Bobbi Brown Limited Edition Luxe Lip Color in Your Majesty: £25, Bobbi Brown
Get the film noir, red wine lip from Bottega Veneta with this ultra-glam, soft and smooth luxurious lipstick from Bobbi's winter Wine & Chocolate collection. Heavyweight gold packaging adds to the luxury festive feel.
6. Glo & Ray Hydrating Lip Gloss in Wonderland: £10, Glo & Ray
After several seasons of creams and mattes ruling the roost, gloss is finally back with a bang. The wet-look, lacquered lip was seen at Gucci, Dior, Max Mara, Vivienne Westwood and Gareth Pugh. Get the look with this clear, high-shine gloss that boosts the look of the lip and can be worn alone or on top of any of the other lip trends this season. Nudes, pillar box reds, rich wines, berry shades and even black cherry all suit a gloss on top this season.
7. YSL Vinyl Cream Creamy Stain in 409 Burgundy Vibes: £26, Yves Saint Laurent
Get the ultra-glossy, patent, mirror-finish pout from Louis Vuitton with this rich wine, over-ripe plum shade from YSL. With a lip gloss applicator, but a lipstick finish, this glossy stain has more staying power than a traditional gloss and also stays put through eating and drinking.
8. Rimmel The Matte Factor in 810: £6.99, Boots
Get the grown-up matte merlot lip from Rodarte with this dark raspberry matte lipstick. Or try the matte vampy purple seen at Zac Posen, with Revlon Matte Balm ColorBurst in 215 Shameless (£7.99).
9. Illamasqua Lip Lure in Pow: £19.50, Illamasqua
Hot pink isn't to everyone's taste, but it was big on the runway this season. Fuchsia pink at Jeremy Scott, a bold magenta at Topshop and statement-making hot pink glitter at Sophia Webster. Get the look from Illamasqua with this richly-pigmented glossy, liquid lipstick – not for the faint-hearted. This is hot pink in all its glory. For a more toned-down look try Urban Decay's Metallized Vice Lipstick in Big Bang, a metallic wearable pink.
Verdict
Urban Decay's 714 red lipstick leaves you instantly feeling "pulled together" and done, whether you're on a night out, or just doing the weekly shop. Delilah Whisper is the perfect suits-all, nude shade, while L'Oreal Plum Gold is superb value for money and a real lip enhancer. But for sheer edgy, rock’n’roll attitude, nothing beats a deep, gothic rouge-noir like Motorhead from cosmetic rebel, Kat Von D.
