'This feels close to defeat' - mixed emotions for Moyes after United draw

Everton were denied a last-gasp penalty as Manchester United fought from behind to claim a draw in a dramatic Premier League clash at Goodison Park.

Everton, who led by two goals at half-time only for United to draw level, were awarded a penalty deep in stoppage time as Ashley Young went down in the box.

But referee Andrew Madley overturned his decision after an on-field review, ruling that Young had thrown himself to the ground under the challenge of Matthijs de Ligt.

Everton had appeared to be continuing their resurgence under David Moyes as goals from striker Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure fired the Toffees into a deserved half-time lead.

But as United looked to be slipping to a third defeat in a row, captain Bruno Fernandes stepped up to curl a free-kick past Jordan Pickford and give the visitors late hope.

Manuel Ugarte then found the equaliser as he smashed in a volley from the edge of the box, and United finished the stronger side as Pickford tipped over a Fernandes shot.

And while United remain 15th in the table, behind 12th-placed Everton, the hosts will feel they should have had an opportunity to take all three points on a dramatic afternoon.

This result means Everton stay a point ahead of United, with the Toffees now in 12th, with 31 points.

United sit in 15th, with 30 points. They can’t fall lower than that this weekend, though West Ham could be level on points with them if they were to beat Arsenal later today.

FULL-TIME! Everton 2-2 Man Utd

It was a great game for the neutral in the end, with the goal giving United some belief and injecting some pace into the game.

It was end-to-end in the final 20 minutes or so, and though Everton did enough to win the game in the end, they come away with a draw having been 2-0 up.

Despite a great game overall, it will likely be overshadowed at least somewhat by that penalty call. A strange decision to say the least.

The corner comes to nothing and the referee brings the game to an end.

Plenty of drama and controversy, but it ends all-square in Merseyside.

Branthwaite can only head the long ball behind for a corner. Time for one final chance?

No idea how long is left now, but it’s United on the attack, though the chance goes begging as Zirkzee’s ball to Garnacho only finds Pickford.

PENALTY OVERTURNED! Everton 2-2 Man Utd

Young does go down quite theatrically, but there’s definitely an arm or two around him...

And it’s overturned! That will provoke huge debate.

The question is, was there enough evidence to overturn the original decision?

The hosts have a penalty!

From Gueye’s shot, Onana can only palm it straight back into the box. There are two Everton players about to latch onto the rebound, and de Ligt drags down Young!

There’s a review though! This looks like a penalty – there shouldn’t be enough to overturn that decision.

Chido Obi was also booked a few minutes ago.

It’s Everton on the attack now, and Gueye forces a save from Onana....

United get forward and it’s more good work from Garnacho, but the attack ends in a goal kick as the Argentine can’t convert Zirkzee’s cross.
