Liverpool were held by first-placed Arsenal to 1-1 at Anfield in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Arsenal led through Gabriel's fourth-minute header but Mohamed Salah evened the score in the 29th. Salah's 151st Premier League goal moved him to 10th on the all-time list. Liverpool pressed hardest in the second half and hit the woodwork twice. Mikel Arteta's team will go into Christmas at the top of the standings, with Liverpool a point behind in second.

Defending champion Manchester City is likely happiest with the result after seeing two of its title rivals drop points. City, which fell to fifth while it was away winning the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia this week, is six points behind Arsenal with a game in hand.

Another title challenger, Aston Villa, also dropped points with a surprise 1-1 draw against Sheffield United on Friday. Liverpool has drawn back-to-back games in the league against Manchester United and Arsenal.

Jurgen Klopp's team had the better chances to win on Saturday; Trent Alexander-Arnold hit the bar in the second half with only Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya to beat. Nunez dribbles infield past two and tees up Szoboszlai but Nketiah is there with a great tackle in the nick of time.

Salah races back to make a tackle and looks to cleanly win the ball - the foul goes against him, he rages at the ref and picks up a booking for dissent.

Twice Konate is called into action as Arsenal mount a riposte. Zinchenko’s fierce drive is on-target until the Frenchman gets his body in the way, then he’s there again to block another effort from Rice.

Arsenal perhaps feel they’ve weathered the home side’s storm and can come back themselves in search of a late three points.

We’re into the final ten minutes at Anfield - Havertz goes down in the box but nothing is given.

Liverpool’s onslaught continues as they attack the Kop end, but Arsenal still standing firm. Gomez denied by Raya, then Saliba heads away for another corner.

Arsenal go to the bench once more and Nketiah is on for Jesus. The England striker has come up with big late moments for his side more than once in the past.

Lightning counter for Liverpool and they should be ahead - it’s a swift attack but Trent Alexander-Arnold smashes his shot against the crossbar. Salah it was who breezed away through the centre and with four to his right he finds the pass...but the No.66 blazes past Raya and onto the woodwork instead of finding the corner.

Elliott straight into the action as he fires a left-footed strike at goal - it’s not immediately troubling for Raya but deflects just off Gabriel’s shoulder and almost flies into the bottom corner, just clipping the post and going wide.

The corner is cleared and Arsenal counter through Trossard; he doesn’t have the pace to hold off Gomez but does well to keep possession and win a corner of the visitors’ own.

A triple change for Liverpool. It was going to be a double but that’s just been upgraded by one as Diaz has hurt himself in a challenge with Saka.

Off go Diaz, Jones and Gakpo; on come Harvey Elliott, Ryan Gravenberch and Darwin Nunez for the final 25 minutes.

Arsenal make a switch of their own, with Leandro Trossard on for Martinelli - that’s their first of the game.

Saka does well to beat Gomez and cross but Martinelli hasn’t got into a good area and can’t reach it. Odegaard tries one from range after picking up the clearance but it’s well over the bar.

Gakpo at the other end takes up a long pass and tees up Szoboszlai, but yet again the finish isn’t on-point and he fires a few yards wide. Liverpool have stepped it up since the break but the front players haven’t matched the buildup play with their finishing at all.

Arsenal’s turn to try and push forward, trying to stem the tide of that early pressure at the start of the second half. An uncertain Konate header lands for Jesus but he swipes a wild shot out for a throw-in - no teammates in there with him though.

Back come the home side, looking for that crucial next goal. Arsenal haven’t lost after taking the lead in 47 league matches, it’s worth noting. A long record which points to their tactical and defensive improvements over the past couple of seasons.

Zinchenko very lucky now as he gifts the ball to Salah but he tries a pass to Gakpo instead of the better-placed Diaz and Gabriel is, not for the first time, on hand to intercept.

Arsenal asking for trouble if they keep conceding possession this way in their own third of the pitch.

Luis Diaz then frees Gomez down the left channel and the substitute - who has never scored a professional goal - comes within a whisker of his first, curling just wide of Raya’s far post. Klopp demands more and the home crowd respond in kind.

Challenges everywhere, end-to-end stuff!

Jones and Endo do really well to close out Arsenal three times in a row as they try to play out, but Salah and Szoboszlai again get in a muddle trying to fashion a shooting chance. Diaz then also scuffs a shot wide when well-placed, while in between it was Gabriel Jesus who came back to make a fantastic tackle on a Liverpool attacker, with Szoboszlai looking to pull the trigger.
