Liverpool are out of the Champions League after Paris Saint-Germain overturned a first-leg defeat and held their nerve to win on penalties at Anfield.

The Reds suffered their first major blow under Arne Slot as Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones saw their efforts saved by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and PSG scored all of theirs.

Luis Enrique’s team won 1-0 on the night as Ousmane Dembele cancelled out Harvey Elliott’s late winner in the Parc des Princes last week.

Dembele levelled the tie after just 11 minutes and, despite a bright start from Liverpool, it gave PSG the momentum to dominate the first half.

Liverpool were the better team after the break but could not make the most of their superiority and PSG survived long spells of pressure to reach extra time.

And Liverpool are facing a defensive injury crisis before Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle after Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate were forced off.

NUNEZ MISSES: Liverpool 1-2 PSG

Up next for the Reds is Darwin Nunez, better known for his misses than for his goals.

And he adds another to the collection. His pen is not close enough to the corner and Donnarumma saves easily.

Advantage PSG!

Penalty Shootout: Liverpool 1-2 PSG

Goncalo Ramos was brought on in the 120th minute to take a penalty, and has never missed a penalty in his career.

No pressure then, eh?

He scores.

Who else but Mo Salah to take first for Liverpool?

Of course, he scores. Donnarumma doesn’t even move. Honours even.

Penalty Shootout: Liverpool 0-1 PSG

Vitinha has had a fantastic game in the middle of the park and is elected to take the first penalty of the evening.

He takes a deep breath and a walking runup before rolling his pen into the bottom right. Allison gets a hand to it but not quite enough.

What a bizarre penalty.

Penalty shootout

Donnarumma has already made himself the main character tonight, but his opposite number may be the one making the difference here.

Allison Becker has saved three of the last eight penalties he has faced for Liverpool.

PSG will take first in the shootout.

Penalties it is!

Nothing to separate the sides after that last half an hour, and we go to the dreaded penalty shootout.

Liverpool, incidentally, have never lost a shootout in European competition.

But hey, first time for everything, right?

PENALTIES! Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)

Liverpool have lost two penalty takers with Alexander-Arnold and Mac Allister going off. This guess is their five takers are Salah, Gakpo, Nunez, Jones and Van Dijk.

120mins: Both sides look to be out of ideas as Nuno Mendes sends a speculative shot goalwards.

1 minute is added, and Luis Enrique adds Goncalo Ramos to the mix, presumably with the intention of having him take a penalty.

115mins: Salah goes down in the box under minimal contact but the referee immediately wags a finger in his direction.

PSG whip straight down the other end on the counter but Lee’s shot is an easy save for Allison.
