Bale prepares to down Denmark as Wales get set for last 16 clash

Keep up to date with all the latest news from Euro 2020 as England prepare to face Germany with Wales poised to kick off the round of 16 against Denmark on Saturday.

Leon Goretzka came on to their rescue Germany in the dying stages of Wednesday’s Group F conclusion, which of course means Germany travel to Wembley next Tuesday to take on England.

Though Die Mannschaft represent a tough first opponent in the knockouts, England can still count themselves lucky to have fallen on the favourable side of the draw. Wales on the other hand have a very tough run through to the latter stages of the tournament, with Denmark up first, but they also feature in the same side of the draw as France, Italy, Spain and Croatia, while Belgium take on Portugal in the standout fixture, with Cristiano Ronaldo fresh from breaking yet another international record.

Jordan Henderson, who banked a half of football in the Three Lions’ final game against Czech Republic, has moved to rally his teammates: “We’ve got quite a young squad but I think that can be a positive thing. A lot of these lads just go out and play, enjoy the game, play with no fear. And that’s what they need to do again on Tuesday. Go and enjoy it, go and show everybody how good they are. Use the emotion and passion in the right way to give you energy for the game, because that can be the difference really. As an experienced player I can help with that and make sure we’re in the right frame of mind going into the game and make sure training’s at the level it needs to be over the next few days to prepare for that one. Everybody’s confident, everybody’s feeling good and we’ve got a good few days to prepare for a huge game. But a lot of the lads have played in huge games already: Champions League finals, Champions League games, cup finals, big games for England. They’re used to big games even though they’re young and I’m sure they’re looking forward to this one.”

Euro 2020: England are good enough to beat Germany

“England should beat Germany next week... It is not a statement meant to cruelly tempt the fate of a desperate nation – not least because, right now, Germany are in their own unique state of desperation. It is not a hypocritical statement typed in disregard of the false hope that broke English hearts 11 summers ago,” writes Alex Pattle.

Another professional performance from Gareth Southgate’s men could prove to be a difficult test for Germany, maybe now is the right time for England to face them?

Anyone but Germany - but maybe not this time for England

Another ‘professional’ performance by Gareth Southgate’s side may be the perfect counter to the chaos craved by the Germans

Euro 2020: Winning the group feels fantastic for Sweden

Sweden’s Emil Forsberg has said that winning Group E feels “fantastic” for his side.

“It feels a bit strange that we won the game because of the way the game developed,” he told the media after the game. “We allowed them to cross the ball too much, we defended well, we showed great mentality, I‘m proud of the performance of everyone.

“We won the group and it feels fantastic.”

They have been very strong in the group stage, especially in defence. A frantic second half caused them to have to change from their usual tactics during their clash with Poland yesterday, but they managed to attack well and get three goals.

It now looks as if Sweden will face Ukraine in the next round of Euro 2020.

“It‘s going to be a tough game,” Forsberg said of the Sweden tie. “I think they were impressive in the first two games that I saw.

“If it’s going to be Ukraine then we know it‘s going to be a tough game but I hope we‘re going to win.”

Euro 2020: Benzema silences critics with Portugal brace

Karim Benzema, who had not scored in Euro 2020 before last night, was pleased to silence his critics by bagging a brace against Portugal.

“It‘s always like that,” he said in his post-match press conference. “I knew that as soon as I got into the national team, the critics would come out. That’s part of football.

“I never give up. As soon as I put my feet on the pitch I want to score. [On Wednesday] I managed to do that but I train a lot and it‘s always been like that.

“Everybody was waiting for this first goal and that was some extra motivation for me. Of course, there’s more pressure than when you play for your club because it‘s a whole country but for me it‘s a great pleasure.”

Euro 2020: Why did Saka take his shirt off against Czech Republic?

Speaking to The Lions Den, Bukayo Saka has revealed that when he took his shirt off against the Czech Republic it was not a celebration.

Many were perplexed when the TV cameras panned to him, but he said that “it was roasting” and he was merely taking off his thermal baselayer, not celebrating Raheem Sterling’s goal.

Euro 2020: Almost no better game than England vs Germany

Joshua Kimmich believes that there are few better games than those between Germany and England.

Speaking about the draw after his side’s 2-2- draw with Portugal, he said: “Yeah, awesome. There’s almost no better game. Whether it has to be in the round of 16 is a moot point. I hope that we have now arrived in the tournament. We have room for improvement and will show that in the next game.”

Hungary were a stern test for Löw’s side and it took a late Leon Goretzka equaliser to rescue a necessary point for. Kimmich thinks that Germany were not great at countering the compact Hungarian setup.

“Hungary were compact and did well,” he added. “We were not great at finding a solution, but we showed great morale. In the end it is only important to go through. That will also be the case for the next match and I think we have a good chance to accomplish that.”
