Richarlison’s first goals for Tottenham saw them mark their Champions League return with a 2-0 win over 10-man Marseille.
The summer signing scored two headers in the space of five second-half minutes to get Spurs out of trouble in their Group D opener.
Playing at the elite level for the first time since 2020, Antonio Conte’s men were labouring against the Ligue 1 side, who had Chancel Mbemba sent off early in the second half.
But Richarlison, making his Champions League debut, opened his account for the club in the 76th minute from Ivan Perisic’s cross and then repeated the trick to kill the game from a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg delivery.
His double ensured Spurs got their campaign off to a winning start in an otherwise largely difficult round of action for British teams.

Fabio Paratici feels Tottenham Hotspur have closed the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool but acknowledged they still have a “long way” to go in their project.
The managing director has been at the club for just over 12 months and made a flurry of signings during that period, which included seven this summer.
July arrivals Ivan Perisic and Richarlison have hit the ground running and Spurs have greater depth compared to last season, but the Italian echoed the sentiments of boss Antonio Conte by insisting they are just at the start of a process of trying to compete with the world’s best.
Paratici told SpursTV: “One year ago I came here and if you remember my first words were we have to be better, build something important and arrive to be competitive.
“I think we’re in a good place, the gap has reduced. We finished in the table 20 points less than Liverpool and Manchester City so this gap is not possible to reduce in a small time but we’re much better.”

Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris retains the ambition and belief to lift silverware with the club.
Lloris recently celebrated a decade of service at Spurs and despite being a model of consistency during his 10 years in north London, he is yet to win a trophy there.
The closest the France international and many of his current team-mates came to success was three years ago when Tottenham lost to Liverpool in the Champions League final.
After two seasons away, Spurs are back in Europe’s elite competition following an excellent second half of the 2021-22 campaign under Antonio Conte, who saw them recruit wisely in the summer to fuel talk the club’s trophy drought – which now stands at 14 years – could soon come to an end.
Lloris said: “Yes, I’m still looking for it (a trophy) and I believe we are capable to make it, but as I said its going to demand a lot of effort, a lot of work.”

Marseille attackers Cedric Bakambu and Bamba Dieng have been left out of the Champions League squad after deadline-day transfers collapsed, while Dimitri Payet is expected to miss out with a calf issue, Samuel Gigot looks set to still be sidelined and Alexis Sanchez is suspended.
A variety of ex-Arsenal players are in contention to play against their former north London foes even with Sanchez’s absence, as Sead Kolasinac, Nuno Tavares and Matteo Guendouzi could all feature.

Antonio Conte has revealed a burning desire to improve his record in the Champions League ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s opener at home to Marseille.
The 53-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best managers in the world, having lifted numerous domestic titles in England and Italy, but has struggled in Europe’s elite competition.
During five previous seasons in the Champions League, Conte has only made it out of the group stage on two occasions and the furthest he has gone in the tournament was a quarter-final appearance with Juventus in 2013.
“Success in Europe with a trophy is important for every manager,” Conte said. “You know very well that it is not simple, not easy to lift a trophy in Europe and especially the Champions League. It is important to be there and you have more probability if you are the coach of a team who expects to win.
“Two years ago with Inter Milan we lost the final of the Europa League against Sevilla. For sure, in my heart, in my mind, in my ambition there is the will to have success in Europe.”
