Jurgen Klopp apologises to Liverpool fans after Merseyside derby defeat

Liverpool’s slim Premier League title hopes faded further on Saturday when Michail Antonio’s late header earned West Ham a deserved point with a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium.

Liverpool, reeling from a 2-0 defeat at Everton in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday, again conceded first when Jarrod Bowen nodded home shortly before halftime, his 20th goal of the season in his 200th game for the Hammers.

The Reds levelled three minutes after the restart through Andy Robertson before the ugliest of own goals, attributed to goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, put them ahead after 65 minutes. But Antonio ensured the hosts took something from the game when he met Bowen’s cross with a powerful header in the 77th minute.

Liverpool remain third on 75 points, one behind second-placed Manchester City, who have played two games fewer, and two behind first-placed Arsenal, who have a game in hand and a much-superior goal difference. West Ham stay eighth on 49 points.

West Ham vs Liverpool: Latest build-up

Jurgen Klopp on David Moyes, Jarrod Bowen and West Ham: “David is one of the best colleagues. We don’t have time to spend together but actually we spoke over the years a lot before games.

“Like him a lot. Respect him a lot. I think he is doing an incredible job, to be honest. I like the team they have; offensively, really talented. He’s doing a ridiculously good job.

“Jarrod Bowen - I have said a couple of times, one of my favourite players. I like him a lot since he developed.

“They are an opponent who, and I’m not 100 per cent sure, are in a similar situation to us, as they have their lost games... properly.

“So they want, and have to show a reaction. We want, and have to show a reaction. So let’s see who can do this better.”

West Ham vs Liverpool: Latest build-up

Are Liverpool still in the title race? According to Jurgen Klopp, Arsenal and Manchester City will not be worrying about the Reds after their defeat at Goodison.

He said: “I cannot sit here and say [Manchester City and Arsenal] still feel us around. I think even Arsenal and City see it as a two-horse race. We might have to say something else publicly, but they don’t expect for themselves to lose two games from now on, I don’t think so.

“I don’t expect them to do that. If they do it, then we would be completely silly if we were not around. So, I don’t think it will happen but if it happens, then we should be there. That means we have to win our games - starting with West Ham.”

West Ham vs Liverpool: Latest build-up

Jurgen Klopp demands reaction after Liverpool’s defeat to Everton on Wednesday.

“It’s definitely a challenge, but it’s part of the job. I can’t remember ever being as disappointed or frustrated after a game like I was after Everton.

“I’ve unfortunately lost a lot of games in my life, but it was special. We were not there. You see the other two (Arsenal and Manchester City) playing very positive football, high results, but we are where we are because in this precise area, we don’t play positive football.

“I blame myself for that - 100 per cent. I don’t know why or how it happened, but I’m responsible for the mood the team is in, and this team was not.

“In general, like I said, we don’t play positive football. It always feels in the end, we are always catching up with something.”

West Ham vs Liverpool prediction: Reds response expected in London

West Ham and Liverpool are on course for disappointing ends to the season, but of the two, the Reds look the most likely to put recent setbacks behind them and win Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off (12.30pm, TNT Sports 1).

Following Wednesday’s defeat in the Merseyside derby, football betting sites have pushed the Reds’ Premier League title odds out to 40/1.

The lacklustre loss at Goodison Park greatly diminished the chances of sending Jurgen Klopp off with a farewell trophy, and skipper Virgil van Dijk openly questioned the squad’s desire in the aftermath.

A reaction is expected at the London Stadium, where they’ll face a West Ham team humbled by Crystal Palace last weekend.

Good morning

Liverpool’s hopes of winning the Premier League are hanging by a thread as Jurgen Klopp’s side travel to West Ham today.

Defeat to West Ham on Wednesday left the Reds third favourites in the title race, requiring Arsenal and Manchester City to have a “crisis”.

Klopp’s side have won just one of their last four in the Premier League and defeat at Goodison Park left Liverpool facing the prospect of the German’s tenure fizzling out.

They will look to respond at West Ham and against David Moyes’s side, who were hammered 5-2 by Crystal Palace last weekend and must win to keep their hopes of qualifying for Europe next season alive.

We’ll have all the build-up and team news ahead of kick-off at the London Stadium
