In a remote location accessed by a steep, rocky and pitted road, with no lighting after dark, the location couldn't be more tranquil and visually arresting. It is situated on the Algarve's Western Atlantic Coast in the middle of a Natural Park that is 60 km of coastal wilderness from Sagres to beyond Aljezur. For this reason, the views from the rooms - particularly from upstairs - are truly spectacular. Without a doubt, the best restaurant was the seafood-themed O Paulo in Arrifana, a nearby beach village where views of the rugged coastline are stunning.

By plane: flights to Faro take around 3 hours from London and Manchester and 2 hours 30 mins from Bristol. The drive to the hotel takes 1 hour 10 mins. Free parking on-site. Book flights to Faro.

The cubist, simple architecture of this resort might not suit everyone's tastes, but it blends, rather than competes, with the natural surroundings of this area. Though the buildings are nothing special to look at, the inside delights guests with natural touches and décor that is unique. The grounds are kept in a natural state with hiking trails around the property.

We arrived at the resort with a flat tire due to running over a sharp rock on the last section of the road to the top. The staff were helpful and understanding and did their utmost to get the situation sorted out, which it ultimately was. Everyone, from receptionists and cleaning staff to spa therapists and servers, went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable and happy.

The rooms are long and narrow, with living quarters in front and a very large bathroom in the back. The four-poster bed is extremely comfortable, and there is seating, a desk and a low table opposite the bed. The balcony is large, with spectacular views over the terrain and the ocean. The open-plan bathroom is utilitarian yet also attractive in a grey colour.

The Azeitona, the hotel's main restaurant, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, where they serve local Algarvian favourites such as Carolina rice, fresh seafood, local cheeses and freshly baked pastries. The coffee is always wonderful (as you would expect in Portugal) and there is a good selection of local wine. The Medronho bar is cosy yet has an additional seating area for overflow. There is also an outdoor restaurant, Zimba, which opens during high season.

Azeitona: contemporary Portuguese cuisine, organic produce. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Medronho: cocktails, light meals and afternoon tea. Open daily 12 noon until late.
